Carcass a bien réussi c'est clair, mais je suis septique sur leur niveau actuel, excepté Tompa.

J'ai bon espoir que ce soit meilleur que le dernier Carcass (bah ouais moi je le trouve insipide), mais franchement ça me paraît douteux, surtout après avoir annoncé qu'il n'y aurait plus d'albums. Maintenant, les frangins Björler sont toujours au niveau, il suffit d'écouter les albums de The Haunted pour en être persuadé (avec un bémol concernant le dernier, qu'il faudra quand même que je réécoute, il ne m'avait pas laissé une bonne impression).

Seminal Swedish metallers AT THE GATES are back! Following the heat of an ample and highly praised live reunion, the pioneers of the "Gothenburg-style" melodic death metal sound have announced that they are working on a comeback studio album, "At War With Reality", with the classic lineup of their latest masterpiece effort from 1995, "Slaughter Of The Soul", expected to be released worldwide by the end of 2014 via their new label partner Century Media Records.

AT THE GATES checked in with the following comment statement: "So, here we are almost 24 years since the birth of AT THE GATES, and some 18+ years since our latest album 'Slaughter Of The Soul'. A lot of years have passed and we have embarked on some life-changing reunion tours and shows the last couple of years.

"So, why make a new album you might ask, and why now? Well, what we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent. We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities.

"We are fully aware that we have made some very drastic statements in interviews as well as the closing words on the DVD about the longevity of AT THE GATES, but things change, situations change and people change.

"When Anders [Björler, guitar] sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing — that it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great.

"We know you are all curious about the new material, and to make a simple explanation of where we are at musically, we would describe it as a perfect mix between early AT THE GATES and 'Slaughter Of The Soul'-era AT THE GATES, trying to maintain the legacy and the history.

"We chose Century Media as a worldwide partner for the upcoming album. We have all been friends for years with people at the label. Jonas [Björler, bass] and Anders have a history with THE HAUNTED there (as well as Adrian [Erlandsson, drums] with PARADISE LOST).

"So, we hope to bring you updates about the progress of the new album soon. The plan is to record the album in June/July with a tentative release in October / November of 2014 on Century Media Records."

Le groupe explique ce revirement :

Vocalist Tomas Lindberg of seminal Swedish metallers AT THE GATES spoke with Decibel magazine about the band's upcoming studio album, "At War With Reality", due later this year via Century Media Records.

Asked what happened to change the bandmembers' minds about making a new CD in the six years since the AT THE GATES reunion was first announced, Lindberg said: "I think a lot happened, mentally, when we decided to continue touring. When we started to do the global thing in 2011. That whole idea of being an active band, touring and hanging out, just grew on us, I guess.

"To be able to be in a band that has no internal problems whatsoever, to be able to tour around the world together with some of your best friends, it's just incredible, mind-blowing even. Then the idea just grew on us.

"I play in a band that involves some of my favorite musicians and songwriters and we are all still very hungry, creatively. I think that you can hear that in all our other projects, they are very alive and pushing boundaries still — from Anders' [Björler, guitar] solo album, to AGRIMONIA, to the new reinvigorated THE HAUNTED lineup, to DISFEAR and LOCK UP, to PARADISE LOST and VALLENFYRE. We feel that we have great and relevant new music in us. And we know how important this next album will be.

"When Anders came around saying that he had been jamming some new ideas around, it was not hard to make the decision to go 'all in,' so to say.

"I know it's kind of a gamble or what you want to call it. But this is a very creative album that we are writing right now, it's not a comfortable 'Slaughter Of The Soul Pt. 2' or anything like that, it's an album that I feel is pushing our own boundaries, and challenges our collective creative intellect. And that is the main reason for us to do this, it's for our own sake.

"We could easily go out and continue touring the old stuff successfully for quite a while, I think, but this is us putting ourselves on the line here, and we do that solely because we feel that we need to do this, this material is too strong to say no to."

Lindberg also spoke about not wanting to live up to people's expectations of making another album in the vein of "Slaughter Of The Soul".

"We have gone beyond the idea of making 'Slaughter Of The Soul Pt. 2', which was actually never the idea to start with," he explained. "This is an album that is so full on conceptually and creatively, so involved and ambitious that I am almost compelled to call it pretentious. And that brings me back to the feeling that was with us when we were creating 'With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness'. I'm not saying that this album sounds like that album, but it has that burning urge, the sense of importance that album is trying to portray.

"As I have always stated, we are an honest band, a band that is very focused on being true to ourselves and never follow any trends or try to portray a given perception of what people want us to be.

"What we decided on was really to let the music take us where it had to go, to go 'all in,' so to say.

"To answer your question, the record will be filled with a lot of the SLAYER worship and riffage that is 'Slaughter Of The Soul', but people will also recognize the more dark, melodic side that was 'With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness', and maybe some of the more pretentious arrangements that was part of our early career."

Je trouve qu'on s'approche pas mal du son de base du groupe, mais la prod est quand même nettement moins violente, surtout la batterie, ce qui colle un coup à ce qui les fait sortir du lot justement. Les compos ont l'air pas trop mal sinon du peu qu'on entend.

En même temps il s'est passé presque 20 ans entre les deux...il me semble que le matériel en studio a bien évolué. Le son est par là-même différent. Du moment que ça poutre, j'ai envie de dire que le son, on s'en tape un peu, sauf si c'est surproduit bien évidemment.

J'ai pas dit plus moderne, j'ai dit moins violent, surtout la batterie.

Pour le reste pas grand chose à redire de ce que j'ai entendu, ça a l'air assez prometteur comme ça, à voir une fois le truc sorti si vraiment le cas tout le long.

Je trouve pas si pourri que ça en fin de compte. La batterie manque un peu de couilles (et je trouve le son définitivement trop propre) et l'ouverture n'est pas terrible (Allo ui cay le mauvais Dark Tranquillity) mais le riff typique ATG à partir de 25s et le solo ça me botte bien. Et puis bon cette voix.
