Beyond the Red Mirror will be the title of the highly-anticipated tenth studio album by Germany’s favorite sons and metal’s most epic storytellers Blind Guardian. Prepare to have your senses overwhelmed.





Four-and-a-half years in the making, the follow-up to 2010’s At the Edge of Time (which debuted at #2 on the German album charts and at #1 on the American Billboard Heatseekers chart & #108 on the American Billboard Top 200 Albums chart) is scheduled for release in Europe on January 30, 2015 and February 3, 2015 in North America.

Recorded at Twilight Hall Studio in Grefrath, Germany and produced by Charlie Bauerfeind (Saxon, Hammerfall, Helloween), Beyond the Red Mirror showcases Blind Guardian’s long-awaited collaborative work with three different classical choirs: one from the Czech Republic (Prague), one from Hungary (Budapest), and one from the United States (Boston). Two grand orchestras – each featuring 90 musicians – also lend their brilliant talents to the new recordings with absolutely spellbinding results.

Transporting listeners via a mysteriously powerful red mirror into an otherworldly dimension that includes tyrants, gods, and the Holy Grail, the ten songs comprising Beyond the Red Mirror’s story lines revolve around the young protagonist we first met twenty years ago in the 1995 tracks “Bright Eyes” and “And the Story Ends”.

“A story between science fiction and fantasy,” explains Blind Guardian vocalist & lyricist Hansi Kürsch. “The story begins with our 1995 album, Imaginations from the Other Side. The two worlds described therein have changed dramatically for the worse since then. While there used to be several passages between the worlds, there is only one gate left now: The Red Mirror. It has to be found at any cost.”

Asked to describe the band’s guiding principles for the creation of this new release, Blind Guardian guitarist André Olbrich shares: “We want to surprise and impress with our music. Nowadays, music tends to be arbitrary and predictable. But we want to keep developing our music.”

Opening with a tidal wave of surging emotion courtesy of a spine-tingling choir Beyond the Red Mirror unleashes its first gem, “The Ninth Wave”, a consciousness-expanding palette of landscapes and moods bearing the message of an urgent mission still seeking resolution. Closing with an explosion of heroic harmonies & choral glories with a nine-and-a-half minute, self-contained saga “Grand Parade” (called “the best song we have ever written” by Olbrich), the grandiose, uplifting, and ingenious storytelling in Beyond the Red Mirror is guaranteed to leave you breathless.

"Beyond the Red Mirror" est un concept album qui prend la suite de l’album culte "Imaginations from the Other Side". Les deux mondes décrits dans cet opus ont vu leurs environnements évolués de manière dramatique, et s'il y avait de nombreux passages entre ces deux mondes à l'époque, il ne reste désormais plus qu'une porte les reliant, le fameux miroir Rouge (The Red Mirror). Les protagonistes découverts il y a 20 ans avec “Bright Eyes” et “And the Story Ends” n'ont désormais plus d'autres choix que de retrouver ce miroir, quel qu'en soit le prix...

La prod a l'air lisse comme tout avec en plus ces rythmiques très en retrait, ce qui est assez récurrent depuis Night at the Opera vous me direz.
Sauf que sur le dernier album je trouvais qu'ils avaient quand même remis un peu de metal dans les épinards.

Là encore j'ai vraiment l'impression que ça sort de Night at the Opera, ce qui n'est pas une critique en soi. Mais comme pour cet album je regrette le son ultra aseptisé qui ne les met pas en valeur je trouve.

Putain, c'est un peu partout maintenant qu'on n'entend plus les guitares. Batterie et chant en avant, guitare presque indistincte sauf pendant quelques passages, et basse inaudible.

J'espère que ça vient de Youtube (même si aujourd'hui on peut avoir du mp3 top qualité), mais c'est clair que sur ce premier extrait les riffs sont inaudibles...et le son est globalement moyen de toute façon.

Ecoute intégrale de l'album cet aprem, BLIND GUARDIAN devient de plus en plus un groupe progressif c'est une certitude, fini les titres bien speed à la "Journey Through The Dark", "I'm Alive" etc... Quelques refrains en choeurs habituels au groupe, des solos fluides mais le groupe tourne un peu en rond depuis "A Twist In The Myth". Un disque correcte dans le genre mais bien trop loin des premiers albums du groupe à mon goût.

Après trois écoutes :
- première écoute : je n'aime pas la prod, batterie et guitares étant étouffées sous les choeurs et les arrangements symphoniques
-deuxième écoute : je n'aime toujours pas le son mais c'est sympa, il y a de bonnes idées. Pas contre niveau refrain, ça manque de puissance
-troisième écoute: c'est quand même très bon, le groupe reprenant les choses là où il s'était arrêté avec "A night at the opera", "A twist in the myth" étant une tentative moyennement réussie d"une synthèse IFTOS / ANATO et "At the edge of time" ayant sa personnalité propre. Structures complexes, gros arrangements, l'album doit mériter quelques écoutes supplémentaires... Mais je n'aime toujours pas la prod !

Et en passant, le groupe a "changé" de bassiste, même si Holzwarth n'était pas un membre à part entière.

German power metallers BLIND GUARDIAN have announced the addition of Dutch bassist Barend Courbois to the group's ranks.

Courbois has played over 4,000 shows and recorded over 60 albums. He has worked with such musicians as Adrian Vandenberg (WHITESNAKE), Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE) and Atma Anur (JOURNEY). In 2004 he was voted best metal and all-around bass player by Guitar Player magazine.

Speaking about the new BLIND GUARDIAN album, "Beyond The Red Mirror", which is due on on January 30, Courbois said: "This was the longest production I have ever been involved in. As we all know, the recordings took a total of two years. The music is so versatile, which is just what makes the style of BLIND GUARDIAN so unique."

Regarding his style, Courbois said: "I play in a very powerful, but also melodic way. You could compare me to John Deacon. Something that QUEEN fans [and fellow BLIND GUARDIAN members] Hansi Kürsch and André Olbrich really like."

Kürsch says: "Barend is top. He is the ideal bass player for us and has a lot of musical understanding. He is variable and multifaceted, but still able to create all the power we need. And the fact that Krefeld is so close to the Dutch border makes our liaison really easy."

Music has always been in Barend's blood. His father Pierre (74) is a world-famous jazz drummer who has played alongside such superstars as Jean-Luc Ponty and Ben Webster. At the age of four, Barend started playing drums, and at age eight he picked up the bass and for quite a while enjoyed bagpipes as well.

The way he got in touch with BLIND GUARDIAN is not as spectacular as one might think. "One day I got an unexpected phone call from producer Charlie Bauerfeind, whom I had met at a project we both were involved in the early '90s," the bass player recalls. "He asked me if I was available during the next six months to tour with a major metal band. He wouldn't tell me the band's name at first though."

Just one day after agreeing to this new engagement, Courbois met BLIND GUARDIAN in Krefeld, only to find himself on tour two weeks later. "I was a total wreck before my first gig. It's a real challenge to play BLIND GUARDIAN songs, but I love it!"

Je suis un peu étonné qu'ils annoncent ce "remplacement" que maintenant, cela fait depuis au moins mai 2012 que Barend joue au sein de BG. Il est vrai qu'à cette époque, il n'était qu'un 'simple' bassiste de session...

Sinon, en parallèle, Bared a ré-intégré Vengeance en 2013.

Concernant "Beyond the Red Mirror", je devrais recevoir l'album demain, il me tarde de l'écouter même si je n'ai pas beaucoup d'échos positifs pour le moment.
