:bave:

Bravewords.com: The new album seems to blend the best elements of all your past projects. It’s the twang of PRIDE & GLORY meets the emotion of Book Of Shadows meets the brutality of BLS. It’s a masterpiece…

Zakk Wylde: “Thank you very much. I tend to look at it as an iconic classic masterpiece (laughs). We had a great time making it. Sonically, I can definitely fucking say that this is THE best sounding Black Label album, but every time we make a new album… we’re trying to outdo ourselves. Every ZEPPELIN album, they tried to outdo the last one and if anyone thinks they weren’t trying; you’re dreaming. It’s like Ozzy with Blizzard and Diary – sure they were back-to-back, but when they went in to do Diary they wanted to stomp all over Blizzard. That’s what everybody does. It’s like lifting weights. If you bench 500 lbs then next time you want to lift 502 lbs.”

Bravewords.com: The last few Black Label albums have been all about this in-your-face metal, but on this album you seem to have added in more peaks and valleys with some Elton John type piano songs for example…

Wylde: "Every Black Label album has had some mellow shit on it. To me, it’s not a departure…”

Bravewords.com: I wasn’t thinking of a departure more of a full circle…

Wylde: "It’s just me going in and writing more songs. To me, it’s always about the tunes. It’s like what we were saying about Zeppelin; each one of them is a masterpiece as far as I’m concerned. It just depends on what mood your in. Jimmy Page would say each album they did (which is the truth for anybody) is just a moment in time. When I listen to SABBATH, if you know their history, when Sabotage came out, they were beyond pissed off. They had been ripped off, but Sabotage is one of my favorites. Ozzy’s voice is just insane on that one. He was singing his balls off and like I was saying each one of those records is a moment in time.”

Bravewords.com: While we’re on Sabbath – can I get a quote about Ronnie James Dio?

Wylde: "He’s so cool, dude. I saw him at the Golden Gods Awards and I definitely didn’t think that was the last time I was going to see him. He looked fine. He said he had his good days and his bad days where he felt really weak, but he looked good and a week later he was gone. Ronnie kicked ass, Mitch. He was singing his balls off right to the very end.”

Bravewords.com: Let’s talk about the upcoming Berzerkus tour with Children Of Bodom and Clutch. Is this Ozzfest, but on a smaller scale?

Wylde: "Exactly. The hell with it, I’ll just start my own thing. It’s not like there’s a shortage of guys that I know that are super-cool dudes in ass-kicking bands. Alexi (Laiho - Children Of Bodom) I met a while ago and his playing speaks for itself. He’s awesome. Basically, it’s just an excuse for me to get my friends or any of these ass-kicking bands together to do some shows.”

Bravewords.com: Does everybody get the same amount of set time?

Wylde: "It’s like a double headlining thing for Clutch and Children Of Bodom and then we’ll go on, but everybody will get to do their own… kit and caboodle and their own show.”

Bravewords.com: BLS and Children Of Bodom is an interesting pairing…

Wylde: "You look at bills back in the old days, you’d have Black Sabbath with LYNYRD SKYNYRD and you’d throw BOB DYLAN in the mix… It’s like ‘are you kidding me?’ But it’s a lot like Lollapalooza when it first started. It was a throw back to those old bills where you had JIMI HENDRIX, THE MONKEES, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and THE GRATEFUL DEAD. The thing that is cool about that is that you are getting a different group of people in there. It’s not like Grateful Dead fans are jamming out to Sabbath all the time, but if you have a bill with Sabbath and Led Zeppelin both of those audiences pretty much listen to the same thing. They dig both bands. In ’94, when Pride & Glory played Donington the top three acts were PANTERA, EXTREME and then AEROSMITH. I was like ‘holy shit’ and I remember telling Nuno (Bettencourt) ‘you’re going on AFTER Pantera? Whatever you do, bro, I think I’d leave in all the hard stuff today. Leave ‘More Than Words’ back in Boston.’

Bravewords.com: Let’s talk about the new album, Order Of The Black. Was it written and recorded before you went in to the hospital? Or is this a product of your hospital experience?

Wylde: "It was after I got out of the hospital. We did the Pedal To The Metal (tour) thing. I was in and out of the hospital after the shows. Glue me back together and put me back up onstage…

Bravewords.com: Kind of like BRET MICHAELS (POISON)…

Wylde: "Yeah, exactly. Fucking A. Bret, God Bless Him, man. He’s fucking insane, dude. Heart attacks, brain aneurysms and he’s like ‘I’ll be at the Troubadour tonight doing an acoustic set, then come up with a cure for children’s cancer, then world peace, then I got to bring the garbage out and then I’ll have another stroke and I’ll be ready to go. I’ll be ready for American Idol in fifteen minutes. Let me just clear this stroke up and I’ll be right with you. He’s fucking insane, but Bret is cool as shit. What was I saying? Oh yeah, I don’t usually write when I’m on the road because you’re in show mode. You’re doing gigs, meet and greets and you’re seeing the Black Label family so you really don’t have two minutes to yourself to actually think anyway. When I get into the studio, it’s like a canvas. I’m like a giant kid with crayons. The sky is the limit when you get into the studio. The piano is there. The acoustic guitar is there. There’s a wall of Marshall’s and the drums sound like cannons. Everything sounds good. It’s a breeding ground for inspiration.”

Bravewords.com: Did you feel any extra pressure to come up with a great album after all the health issues?

Wylde: "Yeah, I was like ‘I have to put out something good before I croak.’”

Bravewords.com: How are you doing health-wise?

Wylde: "Everything’s fine. I’m still lifting weights. I weigh about 235 lbs from lifting all the time.”

Bravewords.com: Will you have a special regiment for the tour?

Wylde: "Nah, we’re doing fucking five shows a week, but because I’m clocking in at 235 lbs from all the lifting, we’re going to be making more room on the stage just for me. We’ll be taping off areas of the stage so people won’t be allowed to go in ‘my zone’ just so that I don’t hit them with a forearm or tricep (laughs). I don’t want to hurt anybody in the band with a bicep or a fucking side chest pose.”

Bravewords.com: In the past, Black Label was seemingly on a nine month cycle of tour, album, tour. But, with Order Of The Black, you took a little more time to get it done. Was that to concentrate more on the song-writing?

Wylde: "Nah. I took as much time writing these songs as I did on every other record. I didn’t take four years to write these songs. I didn’t do Chinese Democracy (GUNS N' ROSES). Axl (Rose) wrote songs for fifteen fucking years and here’s my best twelve songs. I didn’t do that. I wrote maybe twenty songs in the studio and then we picked the ones we dug. That was it. We went with the ones that are the coolest. I just put some vocals on them. If the song is three and a half minutes long then it took me three minutes to write it.”

Bravewords.com: Will it be as long before the next new album comes out?

Wylde: "I figure, yeah, cause we’re going to be touring for about fucking two years/ twenty-four months or something like that. You’ve got to figure, Mitch, that it’s really a world tour now. We’re going to China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Canada, America and then we have ALL of Europe and then… you’ve got Russia. It’s really a fucking world tour.”

Bravewords.com: Are you surprised at the level of success of Black Label? It really started off as a side-project to fill in the gaps while Ozzy was taking time off.

Wylde: "To me, none of it ‘filled in a gap’. After No More Tears, Ozzy said ‘I’m done’. He thought of maybe making records and doing select dates, but no more tours. If he plays England – he only does London. You know and maybe one show in Italy, one show in Germany and America would be maybe eight shows. That’s it. So, I always looked at it like living with your parents. Eventually, you have to figure something out ‘cause mom and dad ain’t going to be around forever.”

Bravewords.com: But you did figure it out with Pride & Glory, but that only lasted one album and then you tried Zakk Wylde, but that only lasted one album. Black Label is on its eighth record.

Wylde: "Well, obviously, we ran out of beer funds on Pride & Glory with the record company, but I look back on it now and think of things that could have been done differently and otherwise keep the band together and keep plowing ahead. P&G was a cool fucking band.”

Bravewords.com: Do you want to make another Pride & Glory album?

Wylde: "I’m so busy like I said between curing children’s cancer, taking care of the dogs, cleaning the carpets…”

Bravewords.com: That’s Bret Michaels. That’s not you.

Wylde: "Oh, no I’m doing it. We give money to St. Jude’s Hospital all the time. I can do everything in Black Label. Put it this way beside my family Black Label is the biggest thing in my life. I bleed fucking Black Label twenty-five hours a day, eight days a week and 366 days a year. There are all these things I want to do under the whole tree of Black Label besides the merchandise stuff, I want to start directing movies and fucking writing them… all under the Black Label umbrella.”

Bravewords.com: The Black Label merch has become iconic.

Wylde: "The way I look at it, Black Label, is bigger than a band. I don’t want the Zakk Wylde band. Led Zeppelin is much bigger than Jimmy Page or one guy. It’s not the Trent Reznor band; it’s NINE INCH NAILS. That’s a cool fucking entity. The Grateful Dead is bigger than a fucking band. It’s a lifestyle and I thought it would be so fucking cool if… that’s how all the Chapters came about. If you see someone with a BLS patch on – it’s a symbol of brotherhood, family and unity. You could run into a dude in Vancouver and you’re from Montreal and it’s like ‘what’s going dude? My name is Mitch. Obviously, you like Black Label. You’re wearing the colors.’ That happens all the time.”

Bravewords.com: It’s true. That’s happened to me.

Wylde: "It’s like when we raise money for St Jude’s. I tell them, I don’t have fans… I have FAMILY and I give a batch of dough to St. Jude’s on behalf of the Chapters. We raised the money through shows or whatever. If you’re buying Black Label merch or going to the shows – part of that is going to St. Jude’s. It’s fucking awesome, dude.”

Bravewords.com: I didn’t know that. So, a percentage of what you take in goes to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital?

Wylde: "Yeah, totally. At the end of the year, we give a batch of dough or we do shows. On August 10th, we do a show at The Roxy (in Los Angeles) and all of the proceeds from that show are going to St. Jude’s.”

Bravewords.com: That’s fantastic.

Wylde: "It’s killer. Danny Thomas (entertainer) started the whole thing. No family ever gets turned down. If the don’t have the money or anything like that… they don’t get turned down. They take any kid. If you’re kid’s going to be in the hospital for two years, they have a condo set up on the grounds so you can see your kid everyday. It’s fucking great, man. If you can help people – it’s fucking awesome.”
