Sound Theories : sortie le 26 juin 2007

Une date de sortie du prochain album de Steve, Sound Theories, été annoncée par Epic Records : ce sera le 26 juin 2007. Il s'agira d'un double cd, le premier disque comprenant des titres issus des albums de Steve mais ré-arrangés et interprettés live avec le Netherlands Metropole Orchestra. Le deuxième disque comprend des titres inédits composés spécifiquement pour l'orchestre.

Je l'ai vu en vente mais j'ai cru que c'était un nouveau Live sans intérêt. Va falloir que je me penche dessus du coup....

J'ai survolé le premier cd ou Mister Vai joue...
La prod avec l'orchestre est genial ! un son d'enfer !!!
Mais la set list est bof bof for me.

Je vais ecouter le deuxieme cd ou Vai a composé uniquement pour l'orchestre.

Je le trouve d'enfer cet album !
On pourrait discuter de la set-list mais bon, c'est sans fin ! Donc autant apprécier les morceaux qui sont proposés !

Steve Vai propose un coffret de chanson "naked", c'est à dire sans piste de guitare lead ! Pour pouvoir s'entrainer sur les chansons du Maître !

Guitar legend STEVE VAI will release his concert film and live CD Where The Wild Things Are on September 29th, via Favored Nations Records. The show was recorded and filmed at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, MN before a sold-out audience as part of Vai’s successful Sound Theories world tour.

Where The Wild Things Are is Vai’s 21st solo project contributing to his 20,000,000 unit worldwide sales that have accumulated over his 30 year career. Vai chose the State Theatre to film because of its large, lush acoustics and the historical theatre’s gorgeous interior.

Vai is widely known for both his unprecedented guitar playing techniques and the unique design of his signature series Ibanez Jem guitar. But his fans have become inextricably drawn to his melodic depth, and dynamic stage performance. The continued evolution of his craft is made apparent in the astonishing musicianship presented in Where The Wild Things Are.

The 2 hour and 40 minute set contains several new tracks and re-orchestrated pieces culled from his rich catalog. His guitar-wielding extravaganza in “The Murder” is an artistic performance piece that must be seen to be believed.

The addition of virtuoso violinists Alex DePue and Ann Marie Calhoun add a dazzling dimension to Vai’s compositions and stage show, delivering fans the unexpected edge they always expect. Other world-class musicians chosen for Vai’s band are: Bryan Beller (bass), Jeremy Colson (drums), Dave Weiner (guitar and sitar) and Zack Wiesinger (lap steel).

“When I put a band and a show together I try to create an entertainment experience that I would like to have if I was sitting in the audience,” explains Vai. “I like to witness great musicianship but nothing too cerebral or overindulgent, I like to be stimulated by a large dynamic range of emotional intensities and melodic richness, I enjoy when people love their instrument and it shows by their oneness with it, I like to feel as though I'm part of a family with the audience and the band, and I like to walk away feeling uplifted and not beat up by somebody's ego or the things they hate about themselves and the world. And of course I want a cool t-shirt.”

Q: Let’s talk about the new DVD. That tour obviously didn’t come to Australia, so the DVD was the first thing I’ve seen of that line-up.

A: "First of all, I’m sorry I didn’t make it to Australia. It was a relatively short tour because I had just finished a project that had me working in the studio for over a year, which was the orchestra project I did with the Metropole Orchestra in Holland. So at the end of that I wanted to put a band together. Something different, something unique, hopefully something that no-one has ever done, and go out and do a short tour. I wanted to put the kind of band together that would give the music a different kind of dimension.

So I had a couple of different ideas. One of them was to have a rock band core with two additional percussionists. Another was to have a rock band core with a twelve-piece horn section, and another was to have two violins. So I chose the two violins this time because it made the most sense coming out of the orchestra project. The problem was finding the right players because my music, although it can be very compositional in nature, it’s fused with rock and roll sensibility, y’know, because I’m primarily a rock artist. So because the music can be very challenging and demanding I needed musicians that could read music. All the violin players I was auditioning were these metal violin shredders. They sounded terrible. They couldn’t really play well and they didn’t understand the dynamics and the nuance of the music. And all the classical players I auditioned who could read the music didn’t have any rock and roll sensibility, so when I turned my amps up their violin bows melted and they ran for the hills. So I was lucky than Ann Marie Calhoun and Alex DePurdue fell into my life because they are real stunners. They are unbelieveably talented, elite players with great discipline and respect, and wonderful people."

En tout cas, c'est carrément génial en audio, alors avec la vidéo, je sens que je vais pas débander pendant un moment !

C'est assez cool ce nouveau groupe avec violons et cuivres, ça donne un truc en plus à certaines chansons ! Bref, de la bonne balle et de la grande guitare, forcément !

The album is the official companion CD to Where The Wild Things Are and features 12 tracks from the concert that didn't appear on the first CD. The album comes in a beautiful digipak, while the download comes with a PDF booklet.

La 2ème partie audio est sortie sous le titre "Where the OTHER wild things are"... Pas de surprise par rapport au DVD, mais c'est un complément indispensable pour ceux qui auraient le premier volet !
