Producer/guitarist Paul Crook (pictured; ANTHRAX, SEBASTIAN BACH, MEAT LOAF) and executive producer John Madera have announced the formation of DEVILSTAR, an all-star hard rock and heavy metal group billed as the world's first interactive band. The first release under the DEVILSTAR moniker will be a cover of the JUDAS PRIEST classic "Beyond The Realms Of Death", which will be available on streaming and digital platforms on June 1.

DEVILSTAR's rendition of "Beyond The Realms Of Death" will feature performances by three PRIEST alumni — guitarist K.K. Downing, vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens and drummer Les Binks — in addition to Crook and bassist Joey Vera (ARMORED SAINT, FATES WARNING). The song, which marks Downing's first collaboration with Binks (who co-wrote the song with Rob Halford) since 1979, was chosen to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the group's iconic album "Stained Class".

Subsequent DEVILSTAR single releases — which will be a mix of covers and original material — will feature other notable hard rock/metal names, with Crook handling production and mixing in addition to playing guitar. While several tracks have already been recorded for release in the coming months, fans are invited to email devilstarmusic@gmail.com to propose potential "dream team" lineups and/or suggest cover songs to tackle in the future.

According to Billboard, a share of JUDAS PRIEST's back catalogue has been put on sale.

Available for purchase is a portion of the rights of 136 songs, including classic tracks like "Breaking The Law" and "Living After Midnight", said to be worth between £250,000 (approximately $337,000) and £300,000 (approximately $405,000) a year.

The move follows last year's announcement that original PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing's luxury golf resort fell into administration (similar to Chapter 11 insolvency in the U.S.). As a result, the 320-acre estate, located in Shropshire, England, was put up for immediate sale with an asking price of more than £10 million ($13.5 million).

The latest development comes two years after Downing bought out his Birmingham, U.K.-based partners, stating at the time that he was planning to build a leisure resort around his countryside golf course. The estate has an 18-hole, 71-par championship golf course and a stately home used for charity and corporate events.

Administrators from FRP Advisory blamed "tougher economic times within the wider corporate hospitality market," which had put "unsustainable pressure on the cashflow of the estate under its current financial structure."

The sale has been initiated by Alastair Massey and Steve Stokes from financial services firm FRP Advisory which is handling the administration of Ken Downing Ltd.

Massey said in a statement: "Ken Downing was a founding member of JUDAS PRIEST and was one of the driving influences of the band's work up to his departure in 2011.

"As part of the administration process, we are selling the rights owned by Ken Downing Ltd. to 136 tracks, which provide a unique investment opportunity."

In a 2009 interview with Shopshire Magazine, Downing admitted that it could be odd coming back to sleepy Shropshire after touring the world with JUDAS PRIEST.

"It is weird," he said. "I've been going and coming from this place all my life and every time it's like it's reinventing itself. I have to reintroduce myself to everything. I go to the cupboard and say, I'm sure I bought some sugar — where is it?'"

Regarding his decision to buy a house not too far from his Midlands roots, he said, "It became common sense to buy a property of your own and a few of us acquired homes in the south of Spain. I came here in 1985 — a long time. It was the house really that I liked. Before I came here I had a tiny semi in Bloxwich as my first house, but the deal was that there was bus stop outside it, and when we started doing 'Top Of The Pops' in the late '70s, people used to get off the bus and walk up the garden path for an autograph."

Founding JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing says that he had "a change of mind" about leaving the band before his exit was officially announced a decade ago.

Downing left PRIEST in 2011 amid claims of band conflict, shoddy management and declining quality of performance. He was replaced by Richie Faulkner, nearly three decades his junior.

The 69-year-old Downing, who wrote about his departure from PRIEST in his 2018 autobiography, "Heavy Duty: Days And Nights In Judas Priest", discussed his split with the group in a brand new interview with Brazil's "Inside With Paulo Baron".

Speaking about his decision to write a book, Downing said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "I wanted to try and give my side of everything, really. And I know it's always tough to do, and it was tough to do. But the set of circumstances led to what it became.

"Not a lot of people know this, but some things happened in the winter of 2010, and they were not good things that were happening, and I was not happy. I felt I deserved more credibility and more respect. And I'm a very proud guy. So I basically threw the towel in.

"I don't mention this in the book, but a few months later, I changed my mind," he revealed. "I was starting to change my mind. It's like with your girlfriend or your wife or whatever. I've never been married, but I've had lots of arguments with my partners and girlfriends. But after a while, you think, 'Oh, God. Was it my fault?'

"I was talking to Ian [Hill, JUDAS PRIEST bassist] in April [2011]. I [knew] it was a farewell tour, and that was all I was giving up. After a lifetime of dedication, it was just doing the farewell tour [that I was walking away from]. But then I said to Ian, 'I think I'm having a change of mind. I think I should do the tour.' I was talking to him about it. And I asked me to send me the setlist over that they'd been working on. And he sent me the setlist over, but the very next day, they released it to the press that I retired from the band. And then I was really angry. And then I sent in a second letter — not so polite this time. I was really angry because they were obviously talking.

"So, I don't really feel as though I left the band," Downing added. "I feel as though it was orchestrated for me not to be there. So that's what happened. Then I became a very angry person. I neglected to mention that in the book, but it is what it is."

Points positifs :
