Le prochain album de Megadeth sera leur dernier, Mustaine annonce que le groupe se lancera ensuite dans une tournée d'adieu.

MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine has revealed that the band's forthcoming album (due out early next year) will be the final MEGADETH studio album of his career. Mustaine shared the announcement in a social post directly shared with his worldwide fanbase and Cyber Army via his alter ego Vic Rattlehead. Mustaine also revealed that the multi-platinum superstar band will embark on a global farewell tour kicking off in 2026. Also set for next year is a new memoir from Mustaine, details of which will be revealed in the coming months.

"There's so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional," Mustaine says. "Most of them don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.

Dave adds: "We can't wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it's now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it's now. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it's our last studio album. We've made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years. We have done something together that's truly wonderful and will probably never happen again. We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it's played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything."

The video posted to MEGADETH's YouTube page and social media accounts features Vic Rattlehead, the band's mascot, seated behind a desk with an hourglass and a stack of papers that reads "Confidential 2026."

"For over four decades, I've been chained in silence, but the end demands my voice," Vic says. "It is confirmed: The next MEGADETH studio album will be the last. Forty years of metal, forged in steel, ending in fire. And when the new year rises, the global farewell tour. You've heard the warning. Now prepare yourself, Cyber Army. Stay loud, stay tuned, and meet me on the frontlines."

The clip ends with an illustration of Vic Rattelead, with half his body lit on fire.

Pour cet album Mustaine a réenregisté "Ride the Lightning" ! Qu'il avait composée initialement avec Hetfield et Ulrich à l'époque.

Selon lui cela permet de boucler la boucle et de rendre ainsi hommage à son passé. Bon, sur le principe son argument tient la route si on considère qu'il y avait déjà "The Mechanix" ("The Four Horsemen") sur le premier album de Megadeth.

Il n'empêche qu'en faisant cela il prête le flanc à la critique de tous ceux qui affirment qu'il est resté mentalement bloqué en 1982 et qu'il n'a jamais digéré son éviction du plus gros groupe du monde. Alors qu'il semblait justement être en paix avec tout ça ces derniers temps.

Dave Mustaine has confirmed to Rolling Stone magazine that the final MEGADETH album, simply titled "Megadeth", will include his version of "Ride The Lightning", the title track of METALLICA's 1984 album for which he got a co-writing credit following his 1983 departure from the band.

"It wasn't really that I wanted to do my version," he told Rolling Stone. "I think that we all wanted it to turn out a certain way, and for me, this was about something so much more than how a song turns out. It was about respect."

Speaking specifically about METALLICA singer-guitarist James Hetfield, Mustaine added: "No one ever talks to me about that. One day he's a singer, the next day he's this fucking powerhouse and I've always respected him as a guitar player. So I wanted to do something to close the circle on my career right now, since it started off with [Mustaine's band before METALLICA] PANIC and several of the songs that ended up in the METALLICA repertoire, I wanted to do something that I felt would be a good song."

Elaborating on his reasons for recording "Ride The Lightning" for MEGADETH's final album, Mustaine said: "Our intentions were pure. I didn't have any reason I was going to say, 'Oh, hey man, this thing that we've had for 40 years where you guys will never tour with me, me doing the song is going to change things.' That wasn't it at all. It was more about: This is my life going forward. I want to do things that are respectable. And I think doing something where we can pay honor to the guy that … I mean, I hate to say this, because it's just so fucking arrogant, but the guitar playing in METALLICA changed the world."

In a separate video message (see below),Mustaine said: "So on the new album we recorded 'Ride The Lightning', and the reason we did that was, obviously, it's a song that I had a lot to do with writing it. And James and I, when we were working on the song, it became clear to me, when James first started playing guitar, how good of a guitar player he was. And I thought it would be really cool to close the circle to show respect, to play the songs that I've written with METALLICA and to honor our friendship, even though it's been strained and ruined from emotions over the years when we were not necessarily friendly. But one thing I've always had is I've always had a tremendous respect for James's guitar playing and [METALLICA drummer] Lars's [Ulrich] songwriting. So, it was cool to do this and add it to the record. We sped it up just a little teeny bit, and we kind of played around a little bit with the solo and Teemu [Mäntysaari, MEGADETH guitarist] and I both tossed it back and forth to each other. So, you might hear a little bit of some differences with the tempos and, of course, I sing different from James too. But once again, it was about completing the circle and just showing what James and I, as guitar players, did to change the world."

"Megadeth" will be released on January 23, 2026 via Mustaine's Tradecraft imprint in partnership with Frontiers Label Group's new BLKIIBLK label.

Mustaine co-wrote the song "Ride The Lightning" with Hetfield, Ulrich and then-METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton.

J'aurais pas pu mieux dire. Il crèvera avec le nom de Metallica à la bouche, c'est triste.
Et Ellefson avec celui de Megadeth. Tout aussi triste...

En même temps il a co écrit (peut être écrit tout court pour certains concernant la structure des morceaux) la plupart des meilleurs titres des deux premiers albums qui sont devenus des standards du heavy et thrash metal et le mec s'est fait éjecter; il y a de quoi l'avoir mauvaise à vie. Il a quand même repris une revanche sur la vie avec Megadeth et le succès obtenu. Ce titre c'est un moyen de boucler la boucle.

Mustaine révèle dans une interview la véritable raison de cette annonce : il souffre d'arthrose des mains ainsi que du dos, et sent qu'il ne pourra plus jouer très longtemps de la guitare à son niveau habituel.

During a December 5 appearance on SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk", MEGADETH leader Dave Mustaine spoke about the band's recently announced "farewell" tour, which will officially launch in 2026. The trek, dubbed the "This Was Our Life" tour, will be in support of MEGADETH's upcoming "final", self-titled album, which will arrive in January, and will mark the end of more than four decades of musical history for the 64-year-old musician.

Asked why "Megadeth" will be the band's final album and why he decided to embark on a "farewell" tour at this point of his career, Mustaine said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "It had been a long time coming — just physical stuff that was going on with my hands… My hands were letting me down. And there were other things that were difficult because of all the stuff going on in my neck and my trunk. All that area there has arthritis and it has discs that are bulging. I've got a broken lumbar bone. Of course, you know I have my back fused, up by my shoulders, by my neck. And just a lot of stuff."

Mustaine continued: "I always said when it got to the point where I was unable to give a hundred percent every night, that's when I was gonna start considering winding down. And it wasn't that I was unable to give a hundred percent, because we finished the record, and I think we did a good job on it, but there was a period when we were working and I said to my manager, I said, 'I don't know how much longer I can do this. My hands are really hurting.' And I didn't mean to set the ball rolling. Honestly, I just was making conversation, and it turned into me talking to the band guys and sleeping on it and talking to my family and praying on it. And the answer was clear to me that by the time we're done with the record, I'm gonna know how the record's gonna do. If the record does really well, then I'll be able to have one last really good tour. And the part about the farewell thing, it's kind of like the same thing, isn't it? We've got some dates that we wanna play to say goodbye to our friends."

Dave added: "The thing is we're an American band, but we play everywhere. So it's not like we just are weekend warriors, like country acts here in the States. We've got a lot of touring to do in order to do our farewell properly."

After host Eddie Trunk noted that a lot of veteran artists overstay their welcome and don't gracefully bow out of the music scene after they are no longer able to perform their songs properly, Mustaine concurred.  "I don't think there's any reason [for us] to [keep playing when we are not able to deliver a hundred percent]," he said. "I mean, unless you're financially in a bad way and you need to keep playing, which, by the grace of God, I've been successful. I've been able to pay all my bills. All the band guys, they all get their paychecks on time. We do everything right by the book. So, some people, like I said, they may have to keep playing, because there's nothing else for them to do. Now, when I think about, what am I gonna do after I hang the guitar up, that's in relation to touring, and I believe that I'm going to keep doing music in some way, shape or form. But not in the fashion that I was doing with MEGS because if I can't do it and I need to stop playing with my first love, I'm not gonna go out and try and do it again with someone else."

Last month, Mustaine told Kerrang! magazine that MEGADETH's farewell run of shows could last a long time. "We're easily talking about touring for another three to five years," Dave said. "And if we're going to be doing it for that long then, shit, I'll be looking at the birthday I don't even want to think about," he added, referencing the fact that he will turn 70 in 2031.

As someone who overcame addiction to drugs and alcohol and beat throat cancer, Mustaine added: "I'm not caught up in longevity and stuff like that, and being one of those guys who can play until he's in his 80s. I have to remember that people live and they die. And I need to take good care of myself."

Dur non j adore l œuvre de ce mec surtout les 4 premiers albums mais la il va jouer pendant 2 ou 3 ans en live pas non stop c est vrai,mais quand tu as de l arthrose et que réellement tu en souffres tu tires ta révérence .Je distingue l artiste de l homme mais pour moi Mustaine a toujours eu un problème mental un jour il détruit jeff young un jour il dit que c est un bon mec.Un jour il dit que Metallica c est du passé et paf il met un morceau certes coecrit .Il dit que sans Junior pas Megamort et maintenant il veut plus en entendre parler.Et la liste est longue ,ce mec est un génie créatif des années 80 mais bon le bonhomme est trop mégalo pour moi.
