Guitarists Larry Barragan and Rob Trevino from the "Remnants Of War"-era lineup of HELSTAR have revealed to LivingForMetal.com in a recent interview that the band is officially back together and that plans exist to record new material. The group's current lineup is completed by singer James Rivera (also in VICIOUS RUMORS, KILLING MACHINE), bassist Jerry Abarca and drummer Russell DeLeon. An excerpt from the chat follows:

LivingForMetal.com: So would you say HELSTAR is officially back and you plan to record a new album and tour behind it? And what type of time frame do you anticipate that to happen?

Larry: "Yeah, we are a band again. The plan is to record but there again you need a label to do that. Touring, I think will be sporadic. Rob and I make our money and support our families in the corporate world; really all of us have day gigs that quite frankly pay the bills better than anything we could make on the road. So when you hear of us doing a show you know we really wanted to do it because we are basically taking vacation time to play them."

Rob: "We are officially a band again. It is up to the people, the fans, and the labels whether or not we continue on. If the interest is there, we will continue to record and do some touring. For me, I would really like to see us put out at least one more 'official' HELSTAR release for the fans who've asked for it all of these years."

LivingForMetal.com: I know it's in the early stages but what can we expect to hear on the new HELSTAR album? How are the songs taking shape and how has your playing styles and skills changed over the years?

Larry: "I don't practice as much as I used to but I was never really a shredder, you know. I've always tried to select my notes and make my solos interesting; that hasn't changed. I think my picking is a little bit better now. I think the new HELSTAR album will find us sounding a bit heavier but we won't forget our neoclassical roots."

Rob: "I think it will sound like HELSTAR, only updated and with better production. I'd like to think that we can make something that will sound as heavy and dark as we know the band can sound. There will definitely be more aggression at times, but melody as well."

Je connais pas du tout ce groupe dont j'entends souvent parler. Généralement, on m'en dit que du bien, et ça fait longtemps que j'ai envie d'écouter un de leurs albums.
C'est dans quelle veine? Un album particulier à me conseiller?

A l'origine, sur le premier album, c'était (trop?) proche de Judas Priest, heavy metal à l'anglaise.
Puis ils ont peu à peu trouvé leur style vers ce qu'on appelle désormais le "Metal US des 80's", en gros

C'est devenu de plus en plus agressif et rapide (limite thrash) avec également un petit côté épique parfois, et surtout de plus en plus technique, allant jusqu'aux plans néoclassiques sur Nosferatu (1989). Du fait que ce soit devenu plus tordu et moins accessible certains les classent même dans le (speed) metal progressif pour cette époque, après ça dépend ce qu'on met comme sens derrière le mot, mais en tout cas c'est un des premiers groupes de speed metal à jouer autant sur l'expertise instrumentale.
En clair, ça riffe et solote dans tous les sens, avec un style bien à eux et un super bassiste

James Rivera avait une voix moins "ample" que maintenant, plus fine et aérienne encore, plus jeune quoi

Mais déjà excellente (sauf sur le premier) et en progrès constants au fil des albums.

Je pense que l'album le plus représentatif reste A Distant Thunder (1988), il était en soldes récemment chez Century Media. Bon par contre c'est un remaster hein

Perso j'ai un très mauvais souvenir du groupe avec le cd 'Multiples of black' : quel est son poids dans leur discographie ?

c'est le moins bon, mais j'y trouve quand même quelques qualités, mais le son est vraiment pas fameux et les compos nettement moins... euh yeah! que les 4 premiers albums

Ouais Multiples of the Black est un peu anecdotique comparé aux 2 albums qui le précèdent...

J'aime bien "Burning star" malgré un chant un peu "caricatural". Et puis niveau son je trouve que ça a très bien vielli ou alors c'est le remaster qui est bon. "Nosferatu" est effectivement bien différent!

Texas metal legends HELSTAR have signed a deal with AFM Records. The band is currently in the studio re-recording some of its early classics for a "best-of" album, to be released on November 19. The CD will also contain two brand new tracks. An all-new album of original HELSTAR material is tentatively due next summer.

Formed in 1982, HELSTAR achieved legendary status with such albums as "Burning Star" (1984), "Remnants of War" (1986), "A Distant Thunder" (1988) and "Nosferatu" (1989). After the band broke up in the early Nineties, vocalist James Rivera played in a number of groups such as VIGILANTE and NEW EDEN before reuniting with HELSTAR for the "Multiples in Back" CD in 1995. After the LP was issued, the band split up once again. Rivera subsequently released albums with the bands DISTANT THUNDER and KILLING MACHINE before joining VICIOUS RUMORS prior to the the recording of their latest album, "Warball".

Des réenregistrements tout le monde en fait en ce moment...

Mais bon pourquoi pas, les 2 premiers albums n'avaient pas un son d'enfer et le chant de Rivera n'était pas arrivé à maturité sur le premier, donc ça peut être intéressant.

Mais le nouvel album c'est encore plus intéressant

d'un autre côté pour ce genre de groupe qui font des concerts tous les 5 ans en Europe, ils ne jouent que les classiques, donc forcément y a pas une demande pour du nouveau matériel... m'enfin moi je suis partagé, j'achèterai de toute façon

AFM Records has set a November 23 release date for HELSTAR's "Sins of the Past", a "best-of" album featuring re-recordings of the band's classics along with two brand new tracks. The first edition of "Sins of the Past" will come in a special CD layout. A limited picture vinyl version will also be available.

Bon j'ai le promo et je vais le chroniquer. Honnêtement, je trouve ce disque sans intérêt, les nouvelles compos sont très bof. Bref, autant se contenter des versions d'origine.

Pas d'accord dark schneider.

je viens de le chroniquer également et effectivement je soulève le problème des versions originales et de leur qualité face à ces réenregistrements. Néanmoins pour découvrir le groupe et pour ceux qui n'aiment pas les productions minimalistes des 80's je pense que ce "sins of the past" pourra faire l'affaire.

sinon dans la section média de leur site il y a tout "remnants of war "écoutable en intégralité !

j'adore les 2 inédites, enfin Tormentor y a pas mal de passage qu'on retrouve sur un titre de nosferatu... m'enfin, c'est chouette de réentendre du bon Helstar... sinon bon, l'album n'est pas indispensable, je pense que ca vaut plus le coup d'investir dans les albums originaux, notamment les remasters, qui percutent plus au niveau du son...moins grave et plus dynamique.

Pis le packaging est bof...surtout que j'ai recu le boitier pété et que le logo est gravé sur le boitier est pas sur le booklet donc maintenant j'ai l'air con avec un cd tout noir avec seulement l'étoile rouge dessus...
