Têtes de proue actuelles : King Diamond, Amon Amarth, Fates Warning, Primordial, Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, As I Lay Dying, Gwar, Six Feet Under, Powerwolf, Armored Saint, Bolt Thrower, Pentagram, Lizzy Borden, Nightfall, Raven, etc.

Might seem strange, with all the folk/pagan/Viking bands out now, but at the dawn of the new millennium, their numbers were few. In a year dominated by TOOL, SLIPKNOT and SYSTEM OF A DOWN, could anything be a more far afield surprise than Swedes (formed after throwing in the towel with MITHOTYN) playing tales of medieval life at a galloping pace, all told via the world class vocals of Mathias Blad (who’s in fact sung in Broadway-styled repertory companies)? Even today, when most, if not all the lyrics are in their native tongue, hook-laden melodies still catch the ear as easily as they did on this debut.

N°29 : King's X en 2003.
KING’S X prove the talk of claiming hundreds of unreleased songs from over the years to be more than just blather, by constructing an album of only oldies, performed and recorded in the here and now. What is demonstrated is the band’s time-honoured knack for heavy riffing, heavenly vocal harmonies, and poignant lyrics, the latter, unsurprisingly from a place of touching naiveté. The title track is the real corker here, while ‘Danger Zone’ offers amusing youthful pop, and ‘Working Man’ an anthemic power chorded chorus next to a restrained verse. My personal choice to make this list would have been Tapehead, a proud Metal Blade release which I actually prefer to any of the Atlantic albums, actually. Nonetheless, it’s very cool seeing how long King’s X were part of the stable, due mainly to Brian’s appreciation of this national treasure of a trio.

Out of nowhere came these Kentuckians’ debut. 1990 was a last hurrah for bigger names, as death metal became in vogue, all other metal threatened to be swept away in a changing tide of “heavy alternative” as it was initially called, spearheaded by the Pacific Northwest. So a traditional-sounding metal platter, from right here in North America, with a singer (Tom Mallicoat) who could do just that (in a higher register to boot)? What’s not to love?! The fact many (myself included) find it the (only) worthy successor to QUEENSRŸCHE’s debut EP only aggrandizes LETHAL that much more.

Back in 1993, I co-hosted a weekly college radio show on CHRY 105.5 FM in Toronto and this was our go-to album. Honestly lost count of how many times we spun songs from Apocalypse Inside. Helping significantly to put Toronto’s metal scene on the map, SACRIFICE was known for raw, crunchy yet technical thrash metal. Led by vocalist/guitarist Rob Urbinati and guitarist Joe Rico, these Canucks stood toe-to-toe with US counterparts DEATH, EXODUS, TESTAMENT, OVERKILL, bubbling under the Big 4. By today’s standards, the production may seem rather lackluster, but 19 years ago, this was proper headbanging fare. Sadly, Sacrifice called it quits shortly thereafter.

#26) CANNIBAL CORPSE – Kill (2006)
#25) THE RED CHORD - Fed Through The Teeth Machine (2009)
#24) THE CROWN – Deathrace King (2000)
#26) CANNIBAL CORPSE – Kill (2006)
#25) THE RED CHORD - Fed Through The Teeth Machine (2009)
#24) THE CROWN – Deathrace King (2000)
Issued in 2006, Kill marked the return of current guitarist Rob Barrett, who had played on The Bleeding and Vile. For their milestone tenth album, CANNIBAL CORPSE ditched the gore-soaked cover art, hooked up with producer Erik Rutan (HATE ETERNAL), and let the skull-crushing music do the talking. From the furious ‘Make Them Suffer’, to the unforgiving ‘Five Nails Through The Neck’, and the blistering ‘Submerged In Boiling Flesh’, Kill delivers 13 precise tracks of pulverizing death metal. George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s unmistakable roar, combined with the band’s unmatched level of talent, equals the world’s best-selling death metal band, and justifiably so.
Though Fused Together In Revolving Doors is the classic and Clients was the legacy-builder, Fed Through The Teeth Machine is Massachusetts’ THE RED CHORD’s best record, this album drawing on The Red Chord’s strength-upon-strength and putting that force in an environment where it can flourish. Underneath the hyperbole that Red Sox baseball caps are apt to indulge in, the Red Chord has finally allowed its tracks a minutiae of breathing room on this record, the game of let’s-fit-14-more-riffs-here now played with less enthusiasm and, more importantly, less ego-stroking. Curl of the burl muscle-building highlight is ‘Hour Of Rats’, possibly The Red Chord’s finest flex of achievement.
Swedish thrashers THE CROWN really hit their stride on album number four, Deathrace King. Recorded and mixed in a mere 21 days at the infamous Studio Fredman (ARCH ENEMY, SOILWORK), produced and engineered by Fredrik Nordstrom (AT THE GATES, IN FLAMES), Deathrace King was a landmark release in 2000. Showing no remorse, The Crown races you to hell! Song after energetic and aggressive song, ‘Total Satan’ is an unflinching adrenaline rush. Traditional old school and then-modern-sounding new millennium metal were mixed to perfection on ‘Back From The Grave’ and ‘I Won’t Follow’. 12 years later and Deathrace King is still a masterpiece.
