Former DOKKEN and current FOREIGNER bassist Jeff Pilson was interviewed by rock journalist Mitch Lafon for a recent edition of the "One On One With Mitch Lafon" podcast (Facebook page). You can now listen to the chat using the Spreaker widget below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On the possibility of a reunion of DOKKEN's classic lineup, featuring Pilson, vocalist Don Dokken, guitarist George Lynch and drummer Mick Brown:

Pilson: "We're actually working really hard to try and pull something together right now. It has to fall in spaces where there is time off [from my gig with FOREIGNER], so I don't know for sure whether it's gonna happen. So let's just say we're all friendly now, we're all past all the decades-old crap, and we all talk and everything's great. Now it really is just down to scheduling and trying to figure it out. Because, you know, you've gotta do it right, if you're gonna do it. We all feel that way.

"I think we've all come to a place where we're very appreciative of the legacy that DOKKEN has, and we would never wanna just do something for the money and take advantage… 'Cause we get offered a lot of things quite often, and if we wanted to do it that way, we could. But the fact that we don't, I think, is a great sign. I think when we do finally do something, we're gonna try and do it right. Although I don't know if we're gonna ever get to do the big sweeping tour that we've talked about — mostly because of the FOREIGNER commitment — but we're gonna try and do something. So hopefully I'll have something to report sometime soon."

On what would be the "right way" for a DOKKEN reunion to happen:

Pilson: "I think, really, to do it right means that when we go out there, we sound good — no matter how many or few shows we do, no matter… new music or old music. I would love to record some new music with DOKKEN; I would love that. I just don't know if we can or will. I have a sense that sometime we will, somehow, but we'll see. Again, it's just down to quality. Doing it right means doing it with quality. 'Cause we were always very quality conscious back in the day, and I don't think any of us wanna let that go now."

On the current relationship between the members of the DOKKEN classic lineup:

Pilson: "No matter how argumentative a band is, no matter how much… I mean, think of all the time we spent together, think of what we accomplished together… I don't care what anybody says; we all love each other — we really do. There is a love in there that's… I mean, sometimes it's two siblings that love and hate at the same time, but there is a lot of love there. So I'm very glad that when I get an e-mail from Don, I'm not [going], 'Oh, God.' I'm excited to read it. George and I have been close for a long time, so that hasn't been an issue for a while. But, yeah, it feels really good.

"We shared something very special together. I think we're all at the point in life where we kind of appreciate it now. And if we ever get a chance to do some more with it, I think… It would be very interesting, because we've never been in a situation where there wasn't animosity, so I don't know. [Laughs] Maybe it won't work. I don't know. [Laughs]"

On some people's theory that the tension between the DOKKEN members is what made it so great:

Pilson: "That's such a theory, but in our case, that's so not true, because had we been more together, we could have been so much more productive with what we had. 'Cause there's a lot of talent there. I mean, there's one of the greatest rock guitar players ever. There's a rhythm section that was very, very groove-oriented and heavy. And there was singing that could be… there was a huge range of singing there. One of my favorite lyricists in rock is Don Dokken. I mean, there was serious, serious talent in there. So I always think that our tension actually spoiled what could have been really, really great and turned it into just great."

Lynch last year told Glide Magazine about the possibility of a DOKKEN reunion: "Of course, that comes and goes every couple of years [laughs], so who knows. But we're talking again about that."

Speaking about the long-rumored reunion of DOKKEN's classic lineup, featuring Brown, bassist Jeff Pilson, vocalist Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch, Mick said: "There's talk of us doing something in Japan at the end of this year. And if that happens, and we make it through that, then, yeah, maybe there could be some talk of some [more gigs], but I'm, like, 'One step at a time, guys.' I know how we are. Let's just get through that — six shows. And if we can do that, well, then, yeah, maybe we can move ahead. But I don't know. It's just up in the air. We'll just see how it goes."

Asked why he thinks the members of DOKKEN's classic lineup have had such a problem getting along over the years, Mick said: "Listen, some people don't change. It was something that was there from Day One. I mean, it's never gonna go away; it never has gone away. And that's what's making me feel a little bit hesitant about getting together again. I'm, like, I already lived this for so many years. Jeff and I were, like, 'Oh, God. We have to go through this with these guys.' I'm just thinking, I haven't seen a change in either one of them [Don or George], really, so I don't know what to expect, but, hey, I'm willing to find out. In spite of ourselves, we always seem to do well. That's what our manager used to tell us. He goes, 'In spite of yourselves, you guys are really making me mad, 'cause you're getting real famous and you shouldn't be, 'cause you're just a horrible bunch of guys together.' [Laughs]"

According to Mick, he and Jeff have made countless attempts to get Don and George on the same page, without much success. "There comes a point where you go, 'This is just not gonna change.' And it starts to eat us up alive," he said. "You have to decide: well, I'm in or I'm out. And just let it go and play ball with it. Somehow it seems to be work out, but it's never very easy, and I'm sure it's not gonna be this time either."

Brown went on to admit that DOKKEN's proposed reunion is not motivated by creative inspiration. He said: "Listen, if I had to be real honest with you, it's the money we're doing it for, and I think that's the wrong reason. I think the reason should be we want to play together, and I don't think anybody wants to play together, but the money we're being offered to do it, you can't say no. And, to me, that's the wrong reason. But there it is."

He continued: "I'd rather [be] excited about playing with the four guys again — like, 'Oh, man. It's gonna be great. What can we can we do?' — but I don't feel that way. I just feel like, 'Wow, we're just gonna go do these…' I'm already happy playing with the DOKKEN I'm in now, with Jon Levin and Chris McCarvil and Don.

"At one point, Don and I owned the band, and I had to sell my portion back to him, because I realized I'm dealing with a guy who doesn't play ball with someone else anyway, so I'm a fool to hold on to it. So here, buy it from me, Don. So now at least we have one person in charge; that might help. And so there is one guy that can say 'yes' or 'no.' Don owns that name — he is the sole owner of the name DOKKEN. So I'm gonna approach it like I'm working for him, which I am anyway. I'm gonna say, 'Okay, it's your ball. What are we doing?' And when he calls the shots, I'm gonna go ahead and do it. Where I think Jeff and George probably thought, 'Oh, we're just gonna get back together, just like old times.' And no, I don't think that's ever gonna happen, because Don knows he owns it all now. And he is the boss. I mean, he signs my check. [Laughs] You know what I'm saying?"

Surprisingly, Brown also expressed uncertainty over whether a proposed reunion of DOKKEN's classic lineup would result in higher concert attendances for a band that still plays sporadic shows every year.

"I don't know if it's a plus to have the original members or not," Mick said. "I mean, that's my personal opinion. I think DOKKEN does real well without the original members, and we've built that for so long that people don't… I mean, that's a long time to not have the original members around, and when we come back. I don't know if it's gonna be a huge plus. Maybe in the recording end, it might be. But there we are — back to that, where's the incentive in that?"

The reunited classic lineup of DOKKEN — guitarist George Lynch, vocalist Don Dokken, bassist Jeff Pilson and drummer "Wild" Mick Brown — will release a new CD, DVD and Blu-ray, "Return To The East Live (2016)", on April 20 via Frontiers Music Srl. The set will contain footage of the band's October 2016 performance at Japan's Loud Park festival, as well as a brand new studio track, titled "It's Just Another Day".

Lynch, Dokken, Pilson and Brown played one U.S. concert in September 2016 before embarking on a six-show Japanese run dubbed "Unleashed In The East". The trek marked the first time in 21 years DOKKEN's classic lineup had hit the road.

Don recently told the "The Classic Metal Show" that he didn't know "why it took a freaking year" to complete the DVD. He said: "We had almost two hours of just backstage, goofing around, on the train, going to Osaka, Nagoya, on the train, having fun backstage, screwing around. That took forever to edit. So on the new live DVD, there's gonna a lot of bonus footage — a lot of just candid, messing around, having fun. 'Cause, you know, George and Jeff hadn't been in DOKKEN for over 20 years."

As for the musical direction of the new song, Don said that it is "very DOKKEN-sounding" and "very classic '80s" with "big harmonies. It's just like 'Paris Is Burning' meets 'In My Dreams'," he said. The track is the first new song to be recorded by the classic DOKKEN lineup since the 1997 "Shadowlife" album.
