Classic Rock: Who do you consider to be the greatest rock singer of all time, and why?

Soto: "I would normally say Freddie Mercury, but the question is specifically about a rock singer. To me, Freddie was always so much more than just a rock singer. So my answer is Ronnie James DIO. From the early days of ELF and RAINBOW onwards, his track record deserves the accolade. Ronnie’s still doing it, and he still sounds so bloody good. Some other singers have lost if after ten years, but he’s how old?"

He recently admitted to being 66 years old.

Soto: "That’s absolutely amazing. The guy never misses a beat. He’s being doing it for 40 years and he still sounds as good today. When it comes to being the prefect rock singer, Ronnie James Dio is the pinnacle."

BraveWords.com hung out with legendary MOTÖRHEAD guitarist Phil Campbell on the band’s recent jaunt through Toronto. Supporting the hot-blooded Motörizer, the band just played their biggest headline gig ever in Toronto, to an estimated 3,000 sweaty, black-clad drunkards. More from our chat later, but here’s a quick bit of news from Phil concerning HEAVEN & HELL’s Ronnie James Dio…

“He just talked a guy down from suicide! Steve, Ronnie’s assistant told me… Ronnie finished touring on a Sunday, and he says he gets to the airport, and there’s a phone call message on this thing, from Wendy, ‘Call me, call me - I’m at the police station,’ whatever. And there’s a guy, threatened to commit suicide, climbed up on something. And so they whisked Ronnie through on a police escort and everything, and the guy’s saying, ‘The Man On The Silver Mountain told me to jump.’ And Ronnie had to talk this guy down, and he talked him down.”

And Ronnie doesn’t know who this guy was?

“No, just finished touring, performance, just ridden to the airport to go home. I love Ronnie - one of my favourite people on this planet.”

As if all this wasn’t enough to keep the celebrated vocalist busy, Ronnie Dio’s still working on his autobiography ["It's on the back burner right now, because of everything else that's going on"], plus there’s the real prospect of an Elf reunion.

“I’ve been talking to my cousin ‘Rock’ [guitarist David 'Rock' Feinstein] about getting that band back together, and it’s certainly on the cards. But, as usual, it’s dependent on schedules coinciding.”

Elf were the band with whom Dio sung prior to joining Rainbow. They released three studio albums, and Ronnie’s ambition is to re-record some of those songs.

“I’d only want to do an Elf tour if we could come up with a new album. That would include reworkings of some of the older songs, which I don’t think we ever did justice in the studio, plus also a few new tracks.”
