Metal Exiles: You mentioned consistency with your record labels so you could release the records right. What about consistency between "Framing Armageddon" and "The Crucible of Man" with [former singer] Tim "Ripper" Owens doing one and [current vocalist] Matt Barlow doing the other?

Jon: Things happen. Tim was great to work with in the studio and from a stand point of performing live he was great as far as being an incredible vocalist but he was not a true believer in this band. It was a job for him and ICED EARTH is not about that. The guys that were in the band before Matt were true believers in the band and the crowds went ape shit for them and there was a good feeling on stage. That was the thing that was missing and it became apparent to me that a change was going to have to be made. A change was coming regardless but it just so happened that Matt and I spoke after we did the European "Framing" tour and the first thing that we spoke about was doing a project together. As the conversation continued, why do a side project when we can just do ICED EARTH together?! This was not something that was planned and within two or three days from our conversation a decision was made. I was not vetting this out for months. As a composer, this does not change things for me much. I know some people will have trouble getting their heads around that but to me the voice is another instrument and when I write these parts I am writing for the song. I do not write for a singer, a singer must be able to deliver my songs. I do not sit around worrying about my material and by working with guys of this caliber they will be able to deliver what it is as a writer I require otherwise they would not get the gig.

Metal Exiles: So the passion for the band was missing from Tim?

Jon: Only from a performance standpoint because in the studio we did great stuff. He was more interested in doing his solo thing, that was where his head was at and it was becoming more and more obvious. This band was a means to an end for him.

Metal Exiles: ICED EARTH was a paycheck?

Jon: Absolutely, and that is not what ICED EARTH is about. I wish Tim all the best in the world, I am a big fan of his voice and I love the records that we did together. In a way it works anyway because "Framing" is the precursor to the birth of Set and "Crucible" is Set and it is mostly from his perspective so in a sense Framing is telling the prophecy and "Crucible" is Set.

Metal Exiles: You have the Tim Owens thing but you have always had a revolving door. Do you think that has affected ICED EARTH at all or is it all Jon Schaffer's vision?

Jon: ICED EARTH is a vehicle for my songs, that is all it has ever been. People follow a band so they have this fantasy about how a band operates and how it must be but 99% of the time it is all horseshit because they do not know what the reality of it is. I did not start this band to be some egomaniacal rock star, I do not give a fuck about that. I do not give a fuck about being a guitar hero, those are not my goals. The guitar is a tool to write songs and ICED EARTH is a vehicle for my compositions. It has also been a series struggle especially in those first 13 years with Century Media. It was a situation that most bands would have broken up under. These are all things that people do not know about and they make judgments about them and it does not bother me. Anybody that has worked with me knows that I am very fair and loyal but there is a point that I do not put up with anybody's bullshit. At the end of the day it does not make a big difference. It has everything to do with management, record companies, booking agents, publishers. Those are the four things that matters with a bands success. It has nothing to do with Joe Blow on the drums, bass or guitar, it does not matter. If the machine is there and the product is there, which it always has been and every ICED EARTH album has sold well regardless of who is in the band. People in the industry know that the record is going to sell well anyway. It is one of those things that does not concern me and no it is not all about me but it is all about my songs.

:help:

Greg Prato of UGO.com recently conducted an interview with ICED EARTH mainman Jon Schaffer. A couple of excerpt from the chat follow below.

UGO.com: I read there will be a box set of both "Something Wicked" albums — is that true?

Jon Schaffer: Well, it was talked about — but I don't think it's going to happen. I think our record company is going to end up going bankrupt. So I don't think they're going to be able to do that. It was definitely discussed, and we would like to see it happen, but I don't think it's going to happen.

UGO.com: So ICED EARTH will be shopping for a new label soon?

Jon Schaffer: We are. Fortunately for us, our contract is finished. But I feel badly for SPV, because they are in very difficult times — as are a lot of record companies right now.

UGO.com: To set the record straight, why did [singer] Ripper [a.k.a. Tim Owens] leave the band?

Jon Schaffer: Well, he left the band because I wanted him to leave the band. The change would have taken place regardless of whether Matt [Barlow] would have come back - it just probably would have happened after "Crucible". From a technical standpoint, Tim is the most amazing singer I've ever worked with — he can do anything humanly possible. But from a spiritual standpoint, ICED EARTH needs a true believer in that position. Everybody that's ever been in this band — y'know, Tim was the fourth singer — has been a true believer and you feel it on stage. And that's the one thing that was lacking. Tim did a great job — his pitches were amazing live, he was always in tune, and he always did his job. But it was a spiritual thing. I think it was because he really was more interested in doing his solo career, and going in that direction — it was just obvious. So had I not had the discussion with Matt when it happened, there would have definitely been a change after "Crucible". It just so happened that fate intervened, and this is the way it went down. But I wish Tim all the best — he's an amazingly talented guy, and he deserves to go a lot farther in his career. I don't think that's going to happen with Yngwie [Malmsteen, who Ripper currently sings for], but I think it's going to happen if he really digs inside himself, and finds what it is that he's looking for — in a solo-type situation, and goes for it.

UGO.com: What is the status of your DEMONS & WIZARDS project?

Jon Schaffer: Right now, it's on hold. We haven't discussed any specifics of doing another record — although I'm sure it will happen. It's one of those kind of things that Hansi [Kürsch, the group's singer] and I do it whenever we get a chance and whenever opportunity arises. Right now, I've got something else up my sleeve — that is my next "in-between ICED EARTH" activity.

UGO.com: Would you like to discuss what that project is?

Jon Schaffer: Not yet. I'm working on it, and details will be announced later.

UGO.com: Why do you think so many members have come and gone in ICED EARTH?

Jon Schaffer: Well, there's been a lot of difficult years in the band. Most bands would not have survived what this band has gone through. There was never any management until the late '90s, so I was dealing with all of the record company bullshit and everything else on my own. Signing your record contract that was like slavery — a lot of people thought that since we had records out, we'd be making a ton of money. But there wasn't any money. You can't get people to hang around and feel good about something if they feel like they don't have a future. And most people just frankly aren't that committed to something. I started this band as a vehicle for my songs — that's what it is and that's what it's always been, regardless of who's come and gone. It has certainly worked.. Any time I don't follow my instincts, I fuck up. The reality is we're still leading the pack 20 years later and we've sold millions of records — so I'm doing something right here.

UGO.com: What are your and ICED EARTH's future plans?

Jon Schaffer: We've been touring pretty much since February — we're wrapping up in the States on the 20th, and that will be it for the year. We'll take a little time for Thanksgiving and Christmas, then around the first of February, we kick of a European tour with SAXON, and I think we're doing a show in Mexico City with MAIDEN around late February/early March. At this point, that's what we have booked, but we'll be doing European Festivals and probably some more shows in North American in between the spring tour and summer festivals of Europe. So people are going to have to stay tuned to the website.
