Komodorock.com recently spoke with SEPULTURA guitarist Andres Kisser. An excerpt from the interview is available below.

Q: In 2006 you released a concept album, Dante XXI and A-Lex is also a concept album which is based on A Clockwork Orange. Is this now the format that you as a band are taking on?

Kisser: "I don't know. For Sepultura it's really hard to say what kind of stuff we're going to do next and that's the beauty of it (laughs). The soundtrack idea came from experiences I had doing soundtracks for movies here in Brazil. Ten or 11 years ago, Igor and I were invited to participate on a soundtrack for a movie and since then, I have been invited to work with different musicians, actors, writers and I found this very interesting, to write music for a movie because it's totally different to writing with a band. You have to respect certain limits like the directors point of view, the story line, the time frame of certain scenes which all give you tendencies to be more committed because you have to work a lot more with less elements and you really expand your own limits and it challenges you beat those elements. So that is what we did with Dante XXI and it worked out great and we had a great experience doing it and now we're doing it again with Clockwork Orange which is such a great movie, a spectacular book and it was very inspirational for us."

Q: What are the fundamental differences between writing a concept album opposed to a studio album?

Kisser: "I guess it's just the flavour of the book because every album has a concept. Imagine taking Satan away from Black Metal, they're lost (laughs), even love, take love away from any Beatles song, it's like, everything has a concept but we limit ourselves to the book and like I said, once you limit yourself you have the answer to be more creative. In a Clockwork Orange it talks about everything. It talks about drugs, violence, family relationships, friendship, religion and hypocrisy so we could filter all our points of view and experiences in Brazil and touring along with our opinions on politics and religion through the book so it's just a different taste, a different flavour on how to express what we feel. Everything has a concept, if you don't have a concept you can't do anything, you don't have a way to take information or to prove or show your opinion. You have to have a balance or cause to express something. To paint or write a poem ... everything has a concept but if you limit it to a book or a movie, I think you expand your abilities."

J'ai écouté l'album et je n'ai été que convaincu à moitié.
Plusieurs écoutes seront nécessaires pour se forger un avis définitif.

Ils m'ont perdu comme fan ça c'est clair, et quand j'écoute ce morceau je ne suis pas prêt de le redevenir.

Pour moi, Sepultura est mort depuis bien longtemps ...

Il est pas trop mal encore ce titre, c'est pas génial mais au moins c'est audible

J'ai acheté l'album, et je le trouve très correct Le morceau Ludwig Van adapté d'une pièce de Beethoven est intéressant (avec des passages où Sepultura joue comme Helloween, marrant ). Cet album n'est pas du tout immédiat (à la première écoute, je n'ai pas aimé), mais après plusieurs écoutes, je le trouve intéressant et assez bien balancé.

A part la prod' un peu trop propre j'aime bien. Ca manque un peu des solos d'Andreas Kisser mais là j'entends un Sepultura en forme. Et Derrick est très bien sur cet album.

Ben AlexA l'a chopé ce matin et je dois dire que je suis agréablement surpris !

Je ne l'aurais jamais acheté de moi-même, mais finalement je me dis que j'ai peut-être loupé quelque chose... Notamment le précédent dont j'avais plutôt entendu du bien également !

Le précédent est dans la même veine avec des expérimentations si je me rappelle. Mais franchement je trouve que Sepultura est reparti sur de bons rails. A part cette prod' vraiment trop clinique... (défaut de beaucoup de productions de nouveaux albums de groupes anciens genre Exodus, Megadeth...)... Je suis content de voir quelqu'un qui apprécie comme moi cet album!

je me rajoute à la liste de ceux qui apprécient les deux derniers Sepultura !!

avec Dante je pensais que le groupe était sur une bonne voie mais la franchement je suis bien triste... pour moi cet album est a chier!

A-lex est réédité en avril avec 2 inédits de ces sessions d'enregistrement.

SPV ont beau avoir été rachetés, ils appliquent toujours la même politique de réédition à peine 1 an après la sortie des albums...

"Some Sepultura news for you guys...

METALLICA - Sepultura is going to open the two concerts Metallica are playing in São Paulo - Brazil at the end of the month (January 30th and 31st). Nice. SEPULTALLICA one more time!

New A-LEX songs? - Yes. SPV will re-release A-LEX in April with two brand new songs. The songs were recorded during the A-LEX recording session but were not released. Collectors out there, be warned.

DVD plans - Sepultura plans to record a DVD in 2010. It will feature live footage from the upcoming tour in Europe (check the dates below). And they might also shoot more live stuff joined by an orchestra.

A partir de maintenant les rééditions du groupe n'auront pas lieu chez SPV, mais chez Nuclear Blast, puisque le groupe vient de signer un contrat avec le label allemand !

Une interview de Max, disant clairement qu'il est possible que pour feter les 25 de leurs débuts, ils se reunissent. Lui en tous cas est open, et si ca se fait pas de toutes facons lui il est bien chargé niveau planning. Mais il est vraiment open.

Mike Meyer of the Phoenix New Times recently conducted an interview with SOULDLY/CAVALERA CONSPIRACY mainman Max Cavalera. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Phoenix New Times: As the lead singer and primary songwriter for two bands, how does your songwriting process work? Do you sit down with the intention of writing a song specifically for SOULFLY or CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, or do you just write songs and decide later which group they're for?

Max: I write the songs without knowing which band they're for. I just write the songs first. Later on, when I listen to it back, when I'm choosing the songs for the albums, that's when I pick — "Okay, this one goes for SOULFLY, this one goes for CAVALERA CONSPIRACY" — and that seems to work out better. That way I just write nonstop. It doesn't stop my pattern of thought on the writing. I keep writing nonstop. I've got a lot of songs I have not recorded yet. I just write all the time. I'm not one of those guys that writes just for the album. I write all the time, even when I don't have to. I love to just sit down with the guitar and write riffs. It's one of my favorite things to do. I've got tons and tons of songs that I haven't used yet, that I'm gonna use for the next [album] or the one after that. I kind of just listen to them later and then pick and choose which one's gonna go to which.

Phoenix New Times: Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of SEPULTURA's debut album, "Morbid Visions". You're probably sick to death of this question, but will we ever see a reunion of the original lineup?

Max: That's something I don't know. That's a hard one. A lot of people ask me that, and sometimes I feel optimistic. I convinced Igor [Max's brother and former SEPULTURA drummer Igor Cavalera] to do it, 'cause he didn't want to have anything to do with those guys [bassist Paulo Jr. and guitarist Andreas Kisser] ever again. I convinced him to do it for me, and he said he'd do it for me if that was the case, but the other two guys, it's kinda hard. They're still trapped in an old mindset, so it's just something that's gonna have to wait. I mean, it would have been cool to do it next year. There's a lot of cool offers for us around the world. People want to see that reunion, so I just kinda wait and see. In the meantime, I'm super busy with both bands. SOULFLY is going to Israel and China and Australia next month, and I'm going to Brazil with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY for a huge festival in Sao Paulo. So I'm pretty busy with both bands anyway, so I just kinda wait. If that happens, it's cool. If it doesn't, it's still cool. I'm busy anyway.

Max ne dit pas vraiment que c'est possible pour l'an prochain, il dit juste qu'il est tout à fait ouvert à l'idée, mais que les autres ne le sont pas.
Et visiblement il ne croit pas que ça va arriver tout de suite, même s'il espère que ça se fera un jour... comme tout le monde quoi.

Bah non pas moi, je trouve Sepultura bien cool avec Derrick Green.

En même temps, même si je voudrais bien voir ça, faut dire que Max vocalement depuis un moment...

Et pour aller dans le sens de Coco, bien que je deteste les albums avec Green en live le nouveau Sepultura qui reprend du vieux envoie plus que Cavalera quand il le fait je trouve...

Tu veux dire Soulfly? ou Cavalera Conspiracy? ou les 2?

Ouais puis son prénom c'est quand même Derrick et ça c'est énorme !

L'idéal ce serait qu'ils reforment le Sepultura old School, qu'ils ressortent un ou deux albums avec des putains de hits et puis qu'ils se séparent de nouveau et que Green revienne chanter ces albums en live!

Si c'est pour nous interpréter les titres de Roots et les vieux morceaux à la même sauce, c'est même pas la peine...

Bah quoi ??? Je trouve que les vieux titres sonnent bien avec Green, voir même mieux qu'avec ce boulet de Max Cavalera...
