Eric: "I have them on ProTools or four-track, boom boxes whatever I can record them on. The newer stuff is on ProTools. Now more than ever we are getting ready here. Hopefully we'll be recording in the fall, that's what I'm shooting for."

LivingForMetal.com: And that's for the new TESTAMENT album?

Eric: "Yeah, and it's gonna be with the original lineup."

LivingForMetal.com: Even with Louie [Clemente] on drums?

Eric: "Yeah, we're gonna get Louie to come back to do some songs. The drummer situation, we are probably gonna use a couple of drummers 'cause we've had people that are in our lives and a part of TESTAMENT so it wouldn't be fair to not have these people play on it. Probably Jon Allen from DRAGONLORD and SADUS will play on it, who's also been a part of TESTAMENT and toured with us. Just the way we do things now, we don't tour extensively so it's kind of hard to keep steady players. Like if something comes up and someone's not available we'll go, 'Let's see if this guy's available.' Yeah it's gonna be killer, the new material is sounding pretty old-school."

LivingForMetal.com: Has Alex [Skolnick] written a lot of material for the new TESTAMENT album as well?

Eric: "Yeah, he's got some riffs that he's been sending me and they sound pretty TESTAMENT, just really cool stuff. Like that 'Apocalyptic City' kind of vibe. Good chord progressions with octaves over it."

En bref :

Testament enregistre en ce moment dans la maison de Chuck Billy, ils se réunissent quelques week-end, étant donné les éloignements géographiques de certains. Lors de ces réunions, ils bossent de manière intensive, ce qui leur permet de mieux se concentrer sur les compos, plutôt que deux heures à droite à gauche comme si le groupe avait la possibilité de se retrouver régulièrement.

8 ou 9 titres sont en cours de construction, les soli devraient revenir dans les compos avec le retour de Skolnick.

D'après ce que j'ai compris, ils sont revenus sur des titres composés à l'époque de The Gathering mais qui n'ont jamais aboutis, et à priori, avec l'arrivé de Barker à la batterie, ces titres auraient une seconde chance.

Vocalement parlant, le chant sera dans la lignée de The Gathering, Chuck billy ayant apprécié la dynamique des trois types de voix utilisés dans cet album. Les paroles auront pour sujet le cancer du chanteur, la perte d'êtres chers et la guerre en IraK, entre autres...

The Gathering est un putain d'album ! donc ça peut faire un sacré bon truc cette affaire !!!!

Crusher: So what's going on with TESTAMENT?

Chuck: We're doing demos of the new material right now. We have about eight songs right now and we're kind of on a break. Nick Barker [drums, ex-CRADLE OF FILTH], we sent him home to England so he could see his family and stuff. When he comes back in a few weeks, we start right back into it again; finish the demos and write five new songs. We're working hard to finish the record. It's going to be out by March of next year. Right now we're in negotiations because we got released from our contract from Spitfire. So, we're in the middle of negotiating with a few labels. Hopefully, we come to agreements with Nuclear Blast. [Note: since this interview was conducted, TESTAMENT has signed with Nuclear Blast.]

Crusher: What's it like working with Alex [Skolnick] again?

Chuck: It's really amazing; it's definitely different from the way it used to be. When he was younger, all he knew was metal. That's where he started and he wanted to branch out and learn more. That's when he went to school and got his degree in music; he's got his jazz band and he gets a whole variety of music now. I think it's more comfortable to him because it's not all about TESTAMENT. He's a musician, he'll go out and gig and play anything to make some money. That's what he does for a living. When TESTAMENT comes into the picture — when we first got back with Alex, he was all booked up and we couldn't play that many shows. His schedule was booked, and he wasn't going to cancel his schedule for us. This year, 2007, we got his calendar back in December of '06, that's why we can play a lot more shows with Alex right now. That's the way it'll probably be next year, we just gotta get ahead of his calendar and book accordingly.

Crusher: So tell me about the new material.

Chuck: I would say it's a continuation of "The Gathering", which is really kind of surprising. Alex has a couple of songs that he brought to the table, and they have some smashing double bass. It's just crushing! We were all like, "Whoa, Alex, this stuff is thrashing!" To me, that sent a message saying that he understands where we're at, what we've done, what we've accomplished since he's been gone and I think he respects it. He's coming in right where we left off with "The Gathering". With "The Gathering", "Demonic" and those records; we didn't really create lead guitar sections. This year, since Alex is back, we're going to bring back lead guitar again.

Crusher: Those albums had more of a death metal vibe than say the "Practice What You Preach"-era albums did. What took you down that road?

Chuck: Well, the drums I think are what did it. We had Gene Hoglan playing drums on "Demonic". The songs that Eric wrote, I come up with my parts and my lyrics from what I feel and those songs made me feel really brutal; kind of over the top death metal because of Gene's double bass. The songs just pushed me that way. It changes per record too. When we did "The Gathering", the songs didn't push me to death metal; it made me use more of a variety of voices. I think I used three different voices on that record. To me, I actually feel more comfortable with that and enjoy listening to that better.

Le batteur du prochain album ne sera finalement pas Nick Barker, retenu en Angleterre pour des problèmes de visa, mais le mercenaire Paul Bostaph.

Veteran San Francisco Bay Area metallers TESTAMENT have recruited Paul Bostaph (SLAYER, EXODUS, FORBIDDEN, SYSTEMATIC) to play the drums on the band's forthcoming album, tentatively due next spring via Nuclear Blast Records. The group was previously rehearsing and writing new material with British drummer Nick Barker (CRADLE OF FILTH, DIMMU BORGIR), but Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and international work visa issues have prevented Barker from continuing to be involved in the project.

Bostaph, who was a member of TESTAMENT for a brief period starting around February 2004, had previously played several live dates with the group in 1992 and appeared on the band's 1993 live EP, "Return to the Apocalyptic City". He also toured with TESTAMENT in 2006.

Dommage J'aurais préféré John Tempesta à Paul Bostaph

Mias bon, Bostaph n'est pas un mauvais batteur non plus et j'achèterai l'album les yeux fermés !

Est-ce que Bostaph va jouer les parties de Barker ou il va refaire le travail Bostaph est capable de jouer dans le "style" de Barker ? Néanmoins, Bostaph est un bon batteur de Thrash donc pas de soucis pour le prochain Testament

Bostaph est très bon mais comme toi à y réfléchir je préfèrerais la frappe de John Tempesta qui assurait comme un chef avec le groupe, que ce soit live ou sur le First Strike Still Deadly

Et pourquoi pas un retour de Lombardo ?

Je vote pour mais le management de Slayer risque de ne pas être d'accord

Plus j'y pense, plus j'aime bien le choix de Bostaph, il a toujours été près du groupe et n'a jamais laissé sa trace sur un album studio alors tant mieux pour lui

Après Clemente, Tempesta, Hoglan, Lombardo et Barker, voilà que Bostaph débarque ! Ils choisissent bien leurs batteurs !

8 ans que le dévastateur The Gathering est paru... vivement le prochain avec Skolnick et Christian de retour au bercail

Tu préfères le voir avec un vrai chanteur, un vrai bassiste et des bons guitaristes ou que dans Slayer ?
