As previously reported, in a recent interview with The Metal Circus out of Spain, vocalist Joe Lynn Turner accused WHITESNAKE frontman David Coverdale of using backing tapes for his lead vocals while performing live (see details here). Coverdale responded by calling Turner "a daft bugger" in a statement, but he has since followed it up with an in-depth response via the official Whitesnake website. It appears below:
Response To Joe Lynn Turner’s Interview Remarks About My Supposed Miming In Concert
"I am shocked, very disappointed & surprised by Mr Turner's misleading and completely untrue observations he felt it necessary to discuss in a recent interview. Whatever his motives, they are disturbing, to say the least.
I do not ‘mime’ in concert. I never have and I never will.
I am David Coverdale. My career spans almost 40 successful years and I have worked with some of the finest musicians in contemporary music & in all that time I have never ‘pretended’ to sing to tapes when I am performing in front of a paying crowd.
I have no idea how anyone who has seen me working live in concert, or is remotely connected to the music business can even suggest such an odious thing.
I have seen the purported video of me supposedly ‘miming’ and all I can say is he and anyone else who believes this nonsense should look more closely.
It is obvious that I am holding the microphone out to the crowd & inviting the audience to participate, as I do during every show, and have done since the beginning of Whitesnake while my background singers keep the songs vocal momentum.
It is hugely important to me that the audience feel completely part of the Whitesnake show & participate with me from the beginning to the end.
They are called the ‘Whitesnake Choir’ for that reason.
Please know, as most sensible people do, that I am especially blessed in this band with two very powerful singers in guitarist Reb Beach & keyboardist, Timothy Drury & also two very capable background singers in bassist Uriah Duffy & guitarist Doug Aldrich, and when I am working the crowd, these guys hold the songs for me exceptionally well, as most sensible people can see and hear.
There are no vocal backing tapes. Everything you see and hear is being performed live by the musicians and vocalists on stage.
I have no idea why Mr Turner has launched this foolishness, but, I ask that it stop now. It has no merit, serves no purpose and is a total waste of precious time.
No apology is necessary as I have no desire in any way, shape or form to have any communication with him. He should know better.
Next he’ll be accusing me of wearing a wig on stage."

EMI is releasing a 20th Anniversary Edition of Whitesnake’s Slip of the Tongue album with audio and video bonuses. There’s no word yet on whether anything is remastered. The release dates are set for:
June 5th — Germany
June 8th — UK
June 8th — France (CD only, no DVD)
Q: Has this almost controlled performance affected your style or way of playing?
A: No, I suppose there is a bigger issue in the last 30 years of being a bass player in all the big bands... I know that this may come as a surprise, but my job was to copy other people! Copy Geezer Butler, copy John Deacon (QUEEN)... even copy myself by playing the early Whitesnake stuff with other musicians. I get very little chance to be really me when I play bass. There were times, especially with Black Sabbath and Peter Green’s Band, where I couldn’t put anything original in the bass lines of the songs... so, it’s typical for me to try to play like someone else.
Again, it all comes down to what I was saying before about the audience becoming conservative... they only want to hear the songs the way they were recorded. My theory is that the people want to hear the music that they grew up with... that’s the music they love the most... when they
were 16 or 17 years old and they had no worries in their mind. For example, when Bernie (Marsden), Micky (Moody) and myself got together to play the classic Whitesnake stuff, people didn’t think much of it... they preferred David Coverdale with 4 or 5 other musicians despite the fact that we were three of the original guys in the band! They have almost imprinted in their minds that David Coverdale is Whitesnake. If we’ve got the name, that would be a totally different situation... it’s difficult but that’s the music business!"

Rockpages.gr: David Coverdale (WHITESNAKE).
Joe Lynn Turner: "Let me see what is the word that I can use for him…I am trying to use a word I haven’t used before…’cause I love David’s voice and he was one of my favorite singers ever…so how do I put this…what’s the word that I can use for him…I am trying to use a great word. I used fantastic, I used amazing…I used all these words before…Awesome! I think he is awesome! I am a big fan of David Coverdale, regardless of what was happening in the press lately."
Rockpages.gr: How do you feel about that?
Joe Lynn Turner: "It was a mistake. When I’m saying mistake I mean I should have never mentioned names. It was very inappropriate for me to do this. It was unprofessional of me to do this, I am not saying I didn’t hear or see what I heard, to put that straight. I am not saying I take back what I said, I don’t think I should have mentioned names, and I think that was inappropriate of me, and unprofessional to mention names. That’s all there is really. And I regret mentioning names…"
