C'est un nouveau projet de folk/death metal progressif avec des membres connus de la scène finlandaise.
BARREN EARTH is the name of a new Helsinki, Finland-based project featuring members of KREATOR, MOONSORROW, SWALLOW THE SUN and MANNHAI, among other bands. Formed in the fall of 2007, BARREN EARTH's music "combines elements of modern and traditional (death) metal with '70s prog rock and folk," according to the group's official bio. "Among the band's influences are artists like PARADISE LOST, OPETH, PINK FLOYD, JETHRO TULL and also some pioneers of Finnish prog.. The members' individual backgrounds in many internationally known and acclaimed outfits is a testament to the quality of the band's music. These same backgrounds are obviously also echoed in BARREN EARTH's music."

BARREN EARTH entered Jive Studios in Helsinki this past summer to record several tracks which can now be streamed via the band's MySpace page. Check out the songs "The Flame of Serenity", "Ere All Perish", "Forlorn Waves" and "The Floodred" at this location.

BARREN EARTH is:

Mikko Kotamäki (SWALLOW THE SUN, EMPYREAN BANE) - Vocals
Janne Perttilä (RYTMIHÄIRIÖ, MOONSORROW session) - Guitar
Sami Yli-Sirniö (KREATOR, WALTARI) - Guitar
Olli-Pekka Laine (MANNHAI, CHAOSBREED, ex-AMORPHIS) - Bass
Kasper Mårtenson (VENHO) - Keyboards
Marko Tarvonen (MOONSORROW) – Drums

Finnish progressive death metallers BARREN EARTH will release their sophomore full-length album, "The Devil's Resolve", in North America on March 13 via Peaceville Records. The effort will be made available on CD and vinyl, with artwork provided by notable U.S.-based artist Paul Romano (MASTODON).

Mixed by Dan Swanö (OPETH, KATATONIA) at Unisound in Sweden, "The Devil's Resolve" continues with all the trademarks one has come to associate with BARREN EARTH: brutal riffs, gloomy growls, majestic melodies, as well as acoustic and progressive passages. But this time the band has delved even deeper, taking this sophomore effort to the extremes through musical landscapes encompassing brutal death metal, doomy vocals, trippy 70's prog lunacy, pastoral passages and even bagpipes.

Le nouvel album arrive, avec un nouveau frontman sur un nouveau label :
Finnish progressive death metal outfit, Barren Earth, now reinforced by Faroese native lead singer Jón Aldará, have just launched the title track of their upcoming third full-length. On Lonely Towers will be released via Century Media Records on March 30th in Europe and March 24th in North America. You can listen to the song below:

Bassist Olli-Pekka Laine comments: “During the writing process of the album, we did many things from a totally new perspective. If there ever was a certain pattern in a basic Barren Earth song, this time we consciously tried to think things differently. Many other things changed too, some of them unintentionally, some of them willfully. A new production team, a new front man, a new record label... The list goes on.

With the first song representing the album, we make no exception. Instead of putting out a song in a typical verse-chorus form, we thought that this 3-piece boulder would stand for the album better. It demands some concentration from the listener, but patience is rewarded in the end! So there you are, the title track of the upcoming album, On Lonely Towers.”

Vocalist Jón Aldará adds: “On Lonely Towers can be considered a centrepiece of the album concept; stringing together the different storylines from the other songs, uniting the main characters and finally bringing a sense of hope to their struggles. It is also the song which inspired Travis Smiths beautifully crafted album cover.”

On Lonely Towers was mixed by Petri Majuri and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios. The artwork was created by no other than Travis Smith.

Finnish progressive death metal band BARREN EARTH, which features in its ranks guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö (KREATOR, WALTARI), will release its new album, "A Complex Of Cages", on March 30 via Century Media. The follow-up to 2015's "On Lonely Towers" was recorded at Woodshed Studios with producer Victor Bullok (a.k.a. V. Santura).

The disc's first single, "Further Down", can be streamed below.

Vocalist Jón Aldará comments: "For me, this truly feels like a transcendental album for us. The songwriting dynamics have changed quite drastically since 'On Lonely Towers', and even though every song is quite unmistakably BARREN EARTH, the album as a whole brings us towards something stranger. Lyrically, the album follows a theme that fits the instability of the music, namely the isolating aspect of suffering from different mental issues such as manic depression, psychopathy and agoraphobia."

Bassist Olli-Pekka Laine adds: "Like BARREN EARTH's previous works, the album's material varies from straightforward standards to experimental opuses. Still, the red line is there, and every song asserts its place in the whole. Brutal death metal, artsy prog rock, pompous melodies with dozens of layers... This music has been crafted without any external pressure, radiating utter spiritual liberation. Production-wise I see 'A Complex Of Cages' as an improved version of BARREN EARTH, thanks to V. Santura, who supervised the album making process and let us concentrate solely on composing, arranging and performing."
