NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane has announced that his late '80s cult metal outfit SANCTUARY will reunite to record a new studio album. "[I've] been talking with Lenny [Rutledge, former SANCTUARY guitarist]," Dane explains. "We are really good friends again and it feels good." He adds, "I missed my relationship with him for many years.

Regarding how the SANCTUARY reunion will affect NEVERMORE, which has a new studio album ("The Obsidian Conspiracy") coming out next month, Dane says, "NEVEMORE is never going away, so don't start any more rumors!"

Reunited '80s cult metal outfit SANCTUARY, which features in its ranks current NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane, has begun writing material for a new studio album. Dane tells MetalSucks, "Wait 'till you hear some of the new stuff! I've got a song that I've been working on the last few days. It's pretty frickin' cool. . . It sounds like 'Into The Mirror Black' stuff [SANCTUARY's second and most recent album, which came out in 1990], which obviously is the evolution of our sound."

Regarding SANCTUARY's decision to reunite after almost two decades of inactivity, Dane says, "I know I said years ago that I wouldn't do this. That was probably because most of [ the members of SANCTUARY] weren't really friends. We didn't talk to each other."

He adds, "The ending of that band was weird. It got kind of ugly at the end. Eventually, we grew up a little and started talking to each other again. Now, we're in a place where we're good friends again. Which is cool, 'cause we're all different people now.

"I had always thought that Len [Rutledge, SANCTUARY guitarist] … He tried a couple bands after SANCTUARY broke up, but then he kind of quit doing music. One day, it occurred to me that he's too talented to not be doing something. I thought, maybe we should work on something together and see what happens."

According to Dane, his signature high-pitched vocal delivery, which has been largely absent from some of NEVERMORE's most recent recordings, will make its return on the forthcoming SANCTUARY CD. Dane says, "I am going to go back and take more voice lessons before I even think about recording another SANCTUARY record. I have to! I haven't been using that aspect of my voice for years because in NEVERMORE, I don't think it's really appropriate. When you're singing that way, you have to be consistent. And since you're never too old to learn anything, why not go back and take lessons?"

Reunited '80s cult metal outfit SANCTUARY, which features in its ranks current NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard, has tapped Brad Hull (FORCED ENTRY) to play second guitar for the band.

Hull and Shannon Sharp, one of the moderators at Metalguitarist.org, were the top picks for the position. Brad, having previously toured with SANCTUARY, was given the opportunity to play the upcoming dates in Atlanta (ProgPower USA XII festival) and Greece.

Rockpages.gr: When you guys did these records it seemed that it was a different world. Now, you are going to release a new album. How is this going to sound comparing to you two previous albums?

Warrel Dane: Well, what I can say is that the new material that we are working on sounds like a natural progression from “Into The Mirror Black”. In that way anyway, and I think that if we would have done a third record back then it would have sounded like this one. We are pretty happy about the direction that we are going. It’s like going through your closet at home and finding an old pair of shoes that were very comfortable, that you forgot, and they are still there, and you put them on and you are like “Ohh, it feels great, I am comfortable with that again”. So, we are getting used to that whole thing, and we are not going to put any limits on what we are going to do in the songwriting process. So, the songs are coming along so good, they really sound like Sanctuary 2011, and I didn’t really think that… that it would work so well, but now that we are getting into it it’s really coming along so good!

Rockpages.gr: Do you find it difficult to get back to you Sanctuary singing style?

Warrel Dane: Yes! Hahaha! Actually that wasn’t the easiest thing in the world! I had to take some more voice training to adapt to it. The kind of singing that I did on those Sanctuary records is very difficult, and you know Nevermore vocals are difficult in another way. To sing high pitch like that all the time you have to be consistent, you have to do it all the time, you have to retain the ability to do it, and I found out really quick! Hahaha! When I started singing the old songs I was like “hey, this is hard!”. But, after I took those lessons it got easier, it gets better all the time, the more that I deal with this stuff.

C'est une bonne nouvelle, n'empêche que je préfère "refuge denied". Je ne suis pas étonné qu'ils ont repris "Die for my sins", un morceau qui a tourné en boucle souvent avec moi
