Swedish metal legends CANDLEMASS are back to celebrate 30 years of doom with a brand new EP. Four studio tracks featuring Mats Levén on vocals are being recorded during September/October for a special anniversary release early next year on Napalm Records. The cover artwork for the EP, which can be seen below, was created by Erik Rovanperä.

CANDLEMASS has also announced that Levén, who's a longtime friend of the band, is now the permanent singer for the Swedish doom metal squad. Also, Per Wiberg is today an essential part of CANDLEMASS's touring lineup on keyboards and filling in for bassist Leif Edling until he's back in shape again.

"The live shows we’ve done after 'Psalms For The Dead' (2012) have been fantastic," says CANDLEMASS guitarist Mats "Mappe" Björkman. "Mats has done a great job fronting CANDLEMASS and I don’t think we’ve ever been this good on stage before! Wacken, Bang Your Head!!!, Sweden Rock, Hellfest, Metal Days, Metallsvenskan, Maryland Death Fest... We have conquered them all."

Three decades of doom later, CANDLEMASS would also like to celebrate their classic albums on the official web site, www.candlemass.se.

"Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" is the first record out October 1. Expect some cool photos, old articles, a very special audio surprise, merchandise etc. Next one out is "Nightfall", then "Ancient Dreams", followed by "Tales Of Creation".

CANDLEMASS is currently working on an anniversary box set together with Peaceville Records. The set will include the band's legendary breakthrough show at the Dynamo festival in 1988 on DVD and some rare rehearsal stuff from the "Epicus" days. In the box, there will also be a 72-page book about the doom maestros.

Leif Edling is slowly getting better from his chronic fatigue syndrome, and will participate in the EP recordings. Next year you can expect some very cool anniversary shows with Leif back on stage.

The band is also happy to announce that Mats Levén, a longtime friend of the band, is now the permanent singer for the Swedish doom squad. Mats commented:

"20 years ago, Leif invited me to the project Abstrakt Algebra. 10 years ago, I started helping Candlemass with their demos. Today, I'm happy to say that I'm the new singer of Candlemass. I truly believe that 2016 will be one of the best years in a long time for Candlemass! Big thanks to my brothers of doom: Janne, Lasse, Leif & Mappe."

Per Wiberg is today also an essential part of the Candlemass live shows with his keyboards and filling in for Leif on bass until he's back in shape again. The band is currently recording the anniversary EP in Ghost Ward studios in Stockholm together with David Castillo.

"The new songs are more like the material on the 'Nightfall' album than what we did on 'Psalms For the Dead,'" says Leif Edling. "Lot's of guitars, and cool riffs but also really good songs that I hope and think our fans will dig!"

Bassist Leif Edling commented on Death Thy Lover: "We said we wouldn't record an album, but we had to release something for the 30th anniversary of Candlemass, so it became this EP. 'Death Thy Lover' is in a way a typical C-mass song and in a way not typical for us. The chorus is pretty poppy if I can use that word (I would never have imagined I would use a term like that to describe anything C-mass!) but the main riff is very metal and the opening is us going classic Anvil. Our old friend and now singer Mats Levén is doing a great job on the song! He's also exactly what we needed live, and the band has became even better with him in the camp. I'm still battling this fatigue syndrome thing so unfortunately I can't be out there with the band on the road or in South America where they are now, but I hope our fans still enjoy the shows and dig the Death Thy Lover EP as much as we do ourselves in Candlemass!"

Metal Wani editor in chief Owais "Vitek" Nabi recently conducted an interview with guitarist Lars Johansson of Swedish doom metal legends CANDLEMASS. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On whether there is a chance that CANDLEMASS will record a new full-length album to follow this year's "Death Thy Lover" EP, even though they claimed 2012's "Psalms For The Dead" would be the band's final LP:

"Actually, if there, in the future, will be a full-length CANDLEMASS album, it all depends on how Leif [Edling, CANDLEMASS bassist and main songwriter] turns out to be in his sickness [Editor's note: Leif is suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome]. It's because you have to be inspired, you have to have fun. And for him, it's, like, he's really putting his soul into the music when he's writing it, and he writes the lyrics as well, and he has to have the right feel for it. And since he's not been well for a while, you don't want to push it. Because I know that he's sitting in his chamber at home, making songs for all kinds of different [projects] he's doing, so he's probably putting a song aside here and there for different things. And when it turns out to be matured, he will tell us that, 'Okay, guys, this is how it is.' Or he feels like, 'I'm not well enough to go through this whole development, from writing to producing to all that,' because there's a big expectation. If you wanna put out a full-length album with CANDLEMASS after this EP, then it has to be perfect in all aspects. So therefore we're just taking it cool year by year. If it works out, it works out. Hopefully he'll get well enough to start playing live with us soon. That is what we all long for."

On whether new CANDLEMASS singer Mats Levén felt any pressure laying down vocals on "Death Thy Lover" after replacing American vocalist Robert Lowe in 2012:

"Actually, that has been always the thing. I mean, for example, in the early days, when Thomas [Vikström] was [stepping] in for Messiah [Marcolin] the first time, it was a big pressure for him. But he did his thing, and the songs were a little different on 'Chapter VI' [1992], for example, and then time flew away, and made the 'white' [self-titled] album with Messiah [in 2005], and that one was a great album; I think he sings like a god on that album. But things didn't work out well, so we made 'King Of The Grey Islands' [2007], which actually was supposed to be Messiah on that one, but he had other ideas in the middle of recording. So, actually, we made a competition. We played four songs in the studio and had, like, sixty vocalists that wanted to come [and audition]. And then, all of a sudden, there was this American guy from Texas, Rob Lowe from SOLITUDE AETURNUS. 'I know that guy! We've been playing with [his band] in the '80s.' Okay, we checked it out. And there he was. And he did a great job in the studio. Unfortunately, not so much live."

According to the game's official web site, "House Of Doom" is a unique game with music written by Candlemass leader Leif Edling and performed by Candlemass. The band has also been part of the development of the game that invites you into the world of extreme style heavy metal music, where both music and lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread and, impending doom.

Epic doom metal riffs from real instruments and doom-style graphics come together in this classic online video slot and result in a never-before-seen player experience.

"House Of Doom" is a five-reel video slot with 10 fixed paylines. It is a volatile game with a high payout. There are wilds, free(doom)spins and bonus scatter symbols (the Skull). Landing three skulls at the right moment triggers the Skulls Of Abyss bonus game, where hidden prizes can be won.

Par contre je n'ai pas trop compris leur histoire de House Of Doom, leur jeu de Casino en ligne. Je trouve ça étonnant comme concept et assez éloigné du metal et à fortiori encore plus du doom. Mais bon pourquoi pas après tout.
Si on peut écouter leurs morceaux avec cet EP plutôt qu'en étant obligé de flamber sur une roulette ou machine à sous en ligne, je ne dis pas non.
