The classical line-up of Cancer, consisting of singer and rhythm guitarist John Walker, drummer Carl Stokes, bassist Ian Buchanan and lead guitarist Barry Savage, will reunite in order to help promote the re-release of their first trio of albums by Cyclone Empire Records. It has not been confirmed which festivals the band will appear at, though it has been stated that they will only be playing material from the three early albums.

The band comments: "Through persistent demand from Cancer fans and a process of gang pressing we're happy to announce a reformation of the classic line-up, John Walker (vocals, guitar), Carl Stokes (drums), Ian Buchanan (bass) and Barry Savage (guitar), to promote our first three albums (1990's To The Gory End, 1991's Death Shall Rise, 1993's The Sins Of Mankind) which are being re-released by Cyclone Empire records later this year. Check us out when we play the festivals and remember to hold on to your bollocks!"

The band, formed in a pub in Telford, Shropshire back in 1988, were among the first British death metal bands, and one of the first to be signed for international distribution. Their second studio album, Death Shall Rise, has been ranked as one of the best albums of early death metal.

Putain de crabe...
The classic lineup of U.K. death metallers CANCER — John Walker (guitar, vocals), Carl Stokes, Ian Buchanan (bass) and Barry Savage (lead guitar) — will reform to promote their first three albums which are being re-released by Cyclone Empire Records later this year.

The band plans to make a number of festival appearances during which they will play songs from these first three albums only. CANCER in 2005 released a "comeback" studio album, entitled "Spirit In Flames", on the Copro label. The group's first full-length studio album (fifth overall) since 1995's "Black Faith" was recorded over a three-week period at Philia studios in Henley on Thames, England. An EP, entitled "Corporation$", preceded the "Spirit In Flames" CD and was also released through Copro. Included on the effort was the group's cover version of the CELTIC FROST classic "Dethroned Emperor".

CANCER's most recent lineup included Stokes, Walker, bassist Adam Richardson, and guitarist Dave Leitch (PULVERISED). Leitch replaced Rob Engvikson in 2004 after Rob left the group to focus on his long-running ASATRU project. CANCER split up in 2006 "due to the lack of comitment to the band from John Walker," according to a statement released at the time by Carl Stokes.

U.K. death metal veterans CANCER have inked a deal with Peaceville, the label known for its enviable death metal heritage, from the early days of PARADISE LOST and AUTOPSY to AT THE GATES and VITAL REMAINS through to OPETH, BLOODBATH and AKERCOCKE. CANCER's new studio album is tentatively due in late 2018.

CANCER said in a statement: "We are delighted to have signed a recording deal with such an esteemed label as Peaceville. We have full confidence that they understand this metal and CANCER as a band. Together we want to deliver an album that celebrates our 30-year existence and the old-school death metal sound that we played a part in creating back in 1988 when the band was conceived. So rejoice and hoist the bunting fashioned from flaps of skin, and fill your balloons with the last gasp of a dying man! We are back from the dead. CFC."

One of the U.K.'s premiere death metal purveyors of the late '80s and early '90s, including a major label spell on East West/Warner with 1995's "Black Faith", CANCER now marks 30 years since its formation by announcing its much-anticipated sixth full length album, reuniting all three original core members — John Walker on guitar/vocals, Ian Buchanan on bass and Carl Stokes on drums — for the first time since 1995.

With fan demand and interest in the rejuvenated band ever increasing, CANCER has been busy playing festivals over the last three years in support of re-releases of the first three albums, delivering their own punishing brand of death metal to fans old and new. This was the much-needed catalyst that spurred the band on to return to their classic inspirational sound when writing new material.

The new album is tentatively titled "Shadow Gripped" and will feature twelve songs of brutal old-school death metal. The disc was recorded at Foel studios in Wales with Simon Efemy (PARADISE LOST, NAPALM DEATH, AMORPHIS) handling production and mixing duties alongside the band, with further recording taking place in Spain. The band checked in from the studio saying: "The recording has gone really well. We have captured the raw essence of what the band actually sounds like. Death metal that will bite your balls off, spit them out, and leave you shouting for more!"

"Shadow Gripped" includes a free exclusive bonus track download of "Crocodile Itch", delivered on release date with each CD or vinyl pre-order. The effort features a guest appearance by Anders Nyström of Swedish deathlords BLOODBATH, who comments: "Believe it or not, but KATATONIA used to play a CANCER cover in our early live sets. Yup, that's right — 'Burning Casket'! We then saw ourselves go on and form a little death metal band based on the opening track of 'To The Gory End', and hey, we all know that one, don't we? Last year we ended up recording this song and put it out on a seven-inch EP and I thought it probably won't get any better than this, but it did, as I was given the honor to put down a guest solo on their new ball-cutting album! CFC is back and it has me even more stoked than Carl is Stokes!"
