SALA BOVEDA FORCED TO CANCEL ITS LIVE MUSIC PROGRAM
After more than three decades of being one of the most active venues in the city in terms of concerts, the Vault Room is forced to stop its activity immediately.
As most of you already know, Sala Boveda needs to immediately stop holding concerts by administrative order. Needless to say how difficult it is being for all of us to face this hard blow, in the face of a situation that we consider entirely unfair.
A measure of this kind has more consequences than it may first seem. It's a lot of people who are affected by a measure like this. Hall workers who have given their all over these years and who overnight go without work, hundreds of musicians and promoters - we had 78 concerts scheduled over the next few months - who are going to be very difficult to reschedule their concerts in other rooms on the dates they had reserved, with the consequent economic - and moral - impact it represents.
We would like to thank first of all the wonderful response we have had from all these musicians and promoters when we broke the news. Each and every one of them has given us their encouragement and placed above their empathy towards the room, that the individual harm it imposes to each of them. It's something we've been excited about and it's the only positive we've gotten out of all this. We also don't want to ignore the hundreds of messages that we have received via networks or individually these last 24 hours. Also thank the different associations that fight for live music culture and a fair night leisure - Association of Concert Sales of Catalonia (ASACC), Catalan Federation of Locals of Nocturno (FECALON) and The Guild of Discos of Barcelona - that have been part of our side from the first moment. This helps us fight harder to reverse this difficult situation.
The reason why the room closes its live music activity comes from a neighbor who arrived during the pandemic and who has made life impossible for us from the very beginning, with little intentions to collaborate and solve the problem. In the 30+ years that the living room has been open, first as Mephisto and then as the Vault, there has never been a problem with the neighbors. The relationship has always been excellent and our doors have always been open to them. The court has always made it a priority to not cause any problems and these 30 years without incident prove it. The total irony of the situation comes that this neighbor doesn't live there, who has used a commercial low to make tourist accommodations by renting rooms without being clear that he has permission to do so. It is hard to understand how the administration is allowing this activity to be carried out and more so when the neighbors of the building have not been consulted for it or, of course, given their approval. This is really creating a problem for them with the constant back and forth of people, parties and noises during unseasonal hours. The court has already filed a complaint against this situation. ASACC will also be issuing a statement today, explaining this situation in a more concrete and technical manner.
Now the priority of Vault is to try to save the total closure of the room, scheduled for Tuesday 26th, is that the evening session can continue. To try to explain it simply the live and night sound teams are different. In concerts there are certain tips of sound—drum boxes, distortions, saturated bass, or the same audience singing or applauding—that cause you to at some point pass the set limit. As we have made it clear, this has never assumed any problem to anyone until this neighbor arrived. The night session team does not have this type of problems, hence the night activity can run smoothly. But in order for this activity to continue, the first step is to stop concerts for the time being.
From now on, a fight begins that will be long to get back to where we were. A big part of the reason to be from Vóveda is live music and to stay without it is to tear a part of us apart. Reiterate again our gratitude to the support we have received and that no one doubts that the struggle to have music again starts from this very moment.
Long live the Vault!
