2 nouvelles chansons et 2 reprises de Black Sabbath et Pentagram.
Swedish godfathers of epic doom, Candlemass, celebrate their 40th anniversary of pioneering the genre with a four-track EP, Black Star. Packed with craterous riffs, this celebration of doom metal mastery is set for release on May 9 via Napalm Records. With Black Star, the genre-defying band unveils two brand-new songs alongside two cover versions of timeless classics.

Candlemass mastermind Leif Edling comments: “Not all bands get to see their 40th birthday and it certainly hasn’t been an easy ride. But many ups and downs later, we stand here as survivors, veterans even… a bit scarred perhaps? Still ready though to unleash another piece of doom-laden metal upon an unsuspecting world. You have to do something when you turn 40, right? Anyway, as always, it’s been fun recording some new stuff as well as covering a couple of old favorites.”

Title track, “Black Star”, blends haunting melodies with deeply introspective lyrics, brought to life by the dark, romantic voice of vocalist Johan Länquist. Songwriter Leif Edling’s lyrics delve into themes of existential struggle, temptation, and the allure of darkness – creating an intense atmosphere imbued with Candlemass’ signature sound. The second new track, “Corridors Of Chaos”, marks a true old school instrumental containing both classic metal riffing and stunning guitar playing by Lars Johansson, showcasing the band’s mastery of dynamics. Adding to this tribute, Candlemass delivers a cover of Black Sabbath’s iconic “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”, taking listeners back to 1973. This is followed by their rendition of Pentagram’s classic “Forever My Queen”, further cementing Candlemass’ remarkable contribution to shaping the genre into what it is today.

9 Lives Of Doom – The Story of Candlemass explores the career and legacy of the Swedish doom metal band and their 40-year journey through creativity, collaboration, breakups, and reconciliation.

As part of Candlemass 40th anniversary, they have been booked to perform an exclusive, one-off reunion show with their iconic former singer Messiah Marcolin at the Rock Hard Festival in Athens, Greece. Messiah was an iconic figure in the band’s early success. However, the relationship between Messiah and the rest of the band has been turbulent throughout the years.

Come 2025 marks 20 years since they last shared the stage together. 9 Lives Of Doom will portray how the reunion plays out.

Added to Candlemass present activities, Mats Björkman, Candlemass guitarist recently found a moving box filled with 50 hours’ worth of old video tapes, yet to be seen. These tapes will provide a close and personal documentary of the history of Candlemass from their humble formation in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm in 1985 leading up to present day. After Candlemass anniversary show in Athens the band is booked to enter the studio to record what possibly will be Candlemass’ last record and thus the culmination of the band’s career.

The story is further told through a wide range of interviews with notable musicians and associates to Candlemass. Candlemass’ mark on the genre and their legacy can be heard in bands such as Opeth, Ghost and Paradise Lost’s music. In 2019 Candlemass were nominated for a US Grammy with the album, The Door to Doom. One could say that Candlemass reached a full circle moment when Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi played a solo on one of the tracks on the record.

Candlemass’ journey reflects the human condition and themes such as artistic expression, relationships and coming of age in a genre often associated with youthfulness and virility. 9 Lives of Doom is a story about passion and vision and how Candlemass have been a major contributor to putting Sweden on the world map of heavy metal.
