"Black Ice", AC/DC's first studio album in almost eight years, has entered the UK album chart at No. 1.
According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, "Black Ice" — which arrived in the U.S. on Monday (October 20) exclusively at Wal-Mart stores, Walmart.com and ACDC.com — is reportedly blowing the doors off of the retail giant. Sales for "Black Ice" are outpacing the EAGLES' first week, which was also a Wal-Mart exclusive. Estimates for first week are currently ranging upward of 800,000, which would make it the biggest Sony BMG release in the past two years. "Black Ice" is also scoring huge sales figures around the world, with an initial shipment of more than 2.1 milllion. The biggest territories are Germany (550,000), Canada (344,000), the UK (227,000), France (209,000) and the band's native Australia (202,000). What’s more, the European and North American legs of the "Black Ice World Tour" reportedly sold out in a matter of minutes, while worldwide catalog sales on the year are a split hair short of 5 million units.

Stuart Derdeyn of The Province reports that listeners to the "Jeff O'Neil Show" on 99.3 The FOX (CFOX-FM) Tuesday were surprised to hear none other than Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan co-hosting the open-phones segment of the show and announcing an upcoming official proclamation that Nov. 28 is AC/DC Day in Terminal City.
AC/DC continue to dominate sales charts around the world as Black Ice remains the #1 selling album in Canada, the US, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Argentina and Spain. Released globally on Monday October 20, 2008, Black Ice topped sales charts in 29 countries, including Canada where it sold an incredible 118,759 in its first week, marking the band's first #1 Canadian debut in the SoundScan era and the largest first week sales in the industry in Canada since 2003.
AC/DC rolled their Rock ‘n Roll train through Toronto on Friday, November 7, treating fans to an electrifying night. Reviews of the show were stellar.
The Toronto Sun stated “if they were rusty it never showed over the course of their hour-and-45-minute set as the muscular rock of their huge hits blew the roof off the Rogers Centre.” The Toronto Star reported “that is exactly what AC/DC does - it delivers the goods. No fuss, no muss, no frills…just one monster riff-rock juggernaut after another.”
2008 is shaping up to be a year of firsts for AC/DC. The band is already the highest selling artist of the year worldwide with over 10 million units between Black Ice (5.3 million copies) and the extensive catalog (5.1 million copies), the catalog itself also surpassing sales of The Beatles catalog in North America in 2008.
For the first time in the band’s extensive history, AC/DC graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Additionally AC/DC are the first band to release an entire album for video game play with the release of The AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack. AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack™ gives music fans a whole new way to experience rock’s hardest hitting act with access to 18 live recordings from AC/DC’s epic live performance at Castle Donington.
Sales Analysis - GUNS N' ROSES Vs. AC/DC
Posted on Thursday, December 04, 2008 at 08:30:30 EST
Hitsdailydouble.com is reporting:
Many are expressing surprise that GUNS N' ROSES’ Chinese Democracy sold only 255k in its first week as a Best Buy exclusive. But those who have closely analyzed the situation say that comparing GNR’s total with the 802k tallied by AC/DC in its Wal-Mart exclusive is like comparing apples and oranges, in that radically different circumstances surrounded the two projects.
AC/DC outsold GNR by nearly 500k not because of any particular difference between the two retailers, but as a result of the amount of exposure AC/DC had leading up to release relative to Guns—and most of the blame for that rests at the feet of Axl Rose. IGA and Best Buy were handicapped on a number of levels, due in large part to Rose’s refusal to participate in the setup—dramatically reducing the ability of the label and Best Buy to market the release.
Contrast this situation to Columbia’s superbly orchestrated campaign for AC/DC’s Black Ice, overseen by a highly motivated Steve Barnett, who has a long, close history with the band. AC/DC seemed to be everywhere on TV, radio and the Internet in the weeks leading up to release, spiking the perfectly calibrated campaign by announcing its tour in the midst of the ramp-up and kicking it off just days after Black Ice went to market.
By contrast, Rose submitted to no TV or press interviews, nor did he choose take his band on the road behind the release, while no official video has yet surfaced. AC/DC has also had a far greater radio presence, leading some to wonder why IGA would be motivated to pour additional marketing and promotion dollars into the record after pocketing $14m in the one-way sale of 1.6m units.
Factor in that this was Best Buy’s first exclusive with a major release from a high-profile act, while Wal-Mart pioneered the arrangement back in 2005 with Garth Brooks. And some are asking whether Best Buy had sufficient time to do its own setup, given the fact that Rose didn’t approve the final artwork until a few weeks prior to the release date.
On the other hand, even in these less-than-ideal circumstances, most believe that Chinese Democracy fared better with Best Buy than it would have in general release, due to a concentrated effort on the part of the chain.
The Best Buy/GNR situation is unlikely to slow the trend considering its obvious benefits—notably including guaranteed big money and the elimination of returns—and speculators are speculating that the next big act to ride the wave could be U2, whose next album will be an important part of IGA’s hoped-for recovery from a rare down year.
Some assert that the GNR situation exemplifies the risk/reward trade-off so prevalent in recent Q4s, as the majors rush out superstar albums without proper setups in order to make their numbers for the year, thereby sacrificing potential long-term results for a short-term gain in the crucial fourth quarter.

redOrbit reports that AC/DC's new "Black Ice" album was released exclusively at Wal-Mart, and has become the fourth-best-selling album of the year with 1.6 million copies sold, despite the lack of any digital sales. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Kid Rock's "Rock N Roll Jesus" was the third-best-selling album of the year as of the beginning of this month. It was sold only as a CD until nearly a year after its release, when Kid Rock granted Rhapsody exclusive online selling rights in the United States. The album has sold 3,000 digital copies to date.
