TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider will release a career-spanning compilation, "Rock And Roll Ain't Dead - Dee Snider Essentials 1983-2015", in March through Rhino. The collection will feature music from all of Snider's projects over the years — including TWISTED SISTER, WIDOWMAKER, DESPERADO, VAN HELSING'S CURSE and DEE DOES BROADWAY — as well as three brand new songs.
Speaking to Canadian rock journalist Mitch Lafon of the "One On One With Mitch Lafon" podcast (Facebook page), Snider said about how the new solo material came together (hear audio below): "My solo guitar player; his name is Nick Perri. He played with a band called SILVERTIDE, he played with SHINEDOWN, [and] he played with Perry Farrell. He's a young gun and he's just a fucking dream. I've known him for a long time, and he's a guitar player that I just marveled at, watching him play. And as life came together, he wound up filling in for a solo show. And after the show, my crew and everybody were blowing my phone up and they said, 'You found your Randy Rhoads.' And I said, 'What?' They go, 'Nick Perri is your Randy Rhoads.' I said, 'At 60, I found my fucking guy?' I'm done, man. I'm fucking done. Now I find my guy?' He goes, 'Dude, it was amazing. The two of you, he complemented you, but he didn't… He worked with you, not against you, he didn't clash with you. He complemented the band. He elevated the entire solo band. It was amazing.' And so I went home. And I love Nick. And I was talking to my wife and my son, and I was telling them about the weekend, and they said, 'Why don't you do it?' I said, 'Do what?' They said, 'Why don't you put out some new music with this guy?' I said, 'Are you fucking nuts?' And my son said, 'I haven't seen you talk like this about anything musical in decades.' My son said, 'Dad, as long as I've lived, I've never heard you talk like this.' And [my wife] Suzette said, 'I haven't seen you have any kind of excitement when it comes to music.' It wasn't something odd, like 'Dee Does Broadway', or something, where it was just like a challenge. And I said, 'Really?' So I call up Nick. I said, 'Nick… You got any…?' 'Cause I haven't written new music in decades. I said, 'You got any songs?' He says, 'Three hundred. They're just missing vocals.' I said, 'You have three hundred songs with no vocals?' he goes, 'I can't write melody.' So he's sending me the stuff, and it just speaks to me. And I call him back. I said, 'Dude, did you strip out vocals?' Because, unlike normally, when guitar players write music, guitar players hate a vacuum; they've gotta fill it with fiddling around. He goes, 'No. I just hear where the vocals should go. I just don't hear what the vocals should be.'"
He continued: "There are three new songs on there. One's called 'Rock And Roll Ain't Dead', which my son Jesse wrote. I've always loved the song, and it was my rebuttal to Gene Simmons and when people say the music scene is so dead. Then there's 'Soul Lady', and then there's 'To Hell And Back'. Those are the three new songs that are already recorded, and they will be on the retrospective record, and there may even be a fourth. I'm actually working with a very contemporary writer now, who is on a mission to write me a new anthem that's going to appeal to new generations. And he's approached me about recording a song that he's working on. So there may be a fourth. So there's gonna be new music for the first time."
Dee added: "Quite honestly… it's really just testing the water. Because we've talked about doing an album, and I said, 'Nobody's buying albums.' I said, 'Who knows if anybody is even fucking interested?' So [if] we put out this thing, and people react to the new material, and there's a positive reaction, it could lead to a more extensive… 'Cause Nick and I just connect. As a writer, he's very old school, but he's got a lot of new-school influences as well.
"Anyway… So you may hear more Dee Snider solo. And that's really the direction, if I'm doing [anything] musically, I'm heading in."
Dee then clarified: "I'm not leaving TWISTED SISTER; I wanna be clear. We've got four shows together this year — maybe five or six now this summer — but I'll be doing a lot more solo shows this year."
Snider's new solo band includes Perri, guitarist Dan McCafferty (DEE SNIDER'S SMFS, DEE DOES BROADWAY), bassist Nicolai "Nosferatu" Nifoussi (AUTOMATIC 7) and drummer Joe Franco (WIDOWMAKER, VAN HELSING'S CURSE, TWISTED SISTER, GOOD RATS).
A new TWISTED SISTER song, "30", appeared on the 25th-anniversary re-release of the band's classic album "Stay Hungry" in 2009. The track was described as an autobiographical take on the New York group's storied history in the world of heavy metal.
"Dee Snider's Rock & Roll Christmas Tale", starring and written by the iconic rocker, directed by Adam John Hunter and produced by John B. Yonover, played Chicago's Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E Chestnut) November 4, 2014 through January 4, 2015.

According to Billboard.com, TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider has recorded four songs with Grammy, Oscar and Emmy Award winner Damon Ranger, whose credits include Katy Perry's "Roar" and working with Kanye West.
"[Ranger] approached me and said, 'Hey man, I think we can reintroduce you to a new audience. You're iconic. You're the voice of rebellion. You could be singing a rock 'Roar' for a new pop audience,'" Snider said. "I'm into trying new, challenging things, so I said 'What do you got in mind?' and we did these tracks. I didn't touch them as a writer; [Ranger] said, 'Do you want to write?' 'Absolutely not. I don't know how to write new songs. I know how to write old songs.' [Ranger] has a grand plan of taking me from Active Rock to FOO FIGHTERS rock to pop-rock to stadium rock."
He continued: "Do I think it's gonna happen? Doubtful. It's kind of long shot when you do something like that, but if it works that would be a whole different thing for me to step into that area as a contemporary artist with music being played on contemporary radio, not oldies stations for classic rock stations but actually connecting with people on a contemporary level. Now that would get me interested. That would be a new challenge."
In other news, Billboard.com is premiering a new Dee Snider rock song called "To Hell And Back", which the singer recorded with his solo band, including former SILVERTIDE guitarist Nick Perri. The track will be included in a new album that Dee is currently working on that will also feature material from Snider's past, including his worldwide hits with TWISTED SISTER.
Said Dee: "'To Hell And Back' represents my first truly new, original musical offering since the '90s. When my friend and co-writer, guitarist Nick Perri, presented me with the riff and music bed for this song, I found true inspiration to write for the first time in decades. Lyrically, the song raises a bold middle finger to those who whine and complain about the difficulties of life, but have no real clue what difficult is. As I say in the song, 'Don't tell me your sad story. Don't say your world is black. Just spare me your vainglory. I've been to hell and back!'"

TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider has signed a record deal to release a new solo album titled "Now". Most, if not all, of the material on the disc will be a collaboration with Damon Ranger, a Grammy, Oscar and Emmy Award winner whose credits include Katy Perry's "Roar", working with Kanye West, and the score for "Life Of Pi". Snider has already recorded five songs with Ranger and his team, including members of pop singer Pink's band, in Chicago, and is preparing to return to the studio at the end of February to complete the effort.
During an appearance on a recent edition of the "One On One With Mitch Lafon" podcast (Facebook page), Snider stated about his new musical path (hear audio below): "I've been approached by some top songwriters who said, 'Dee, you're iconic, and we think we can bring you to the masses with contemporary rock music.' And I was, like, 'Let's do it.' They came to me. These are people who write for Kanye, they write for Katy Perry, they write for Pink, they write for Taylor Swift… They're top pop songwriters. And they said, 'Listen…' This guy's name is Damon Ranger. And he says, 'You're iconic. You're the voice of rebellion. And I think with the right songs, you could reach a whole new audience — a mainstream rock audience.' And I said, 'You've got songs?' He goes, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Let's give it a try.' So we demoed one song, called 'We Are The Ones', which is a real Active Rock… it's hard, but it's not metal. And it came out great. So we went into the studio and recorded four more songs. And I just signed two [record] deals, and we're going back into the studio to finish the album at the end of February. And I'm not sure when we're gonna release it."
Describing the sound of "Now", Snider said: "To me, I like the word 'new.' I like something contemporary. And that argues with the point… Someone is screaming at their iPhone [right now while listening to this interview and going], 'You said [you wouldn't make any] new music.' Yeah, [no new music] from me. Actually, Damon said, 'So do you wanna write with me on this?' I said, 'Oh, no!' I said, 'I don't know what's new.' I said, 'I know how to write old.' I said, 'I don't know how to write new music.' So I said, 'I don't want anything to do with the writing process. Create some songs, and if I could feel inspired by them, I will sing them.' And the stuff is really great. It's not thrashy; it's not metal. But it's got attitude; it's got my attitude. It's anthemic."
He continued: "I've been challenged to transform myself at the ripe old age of 61, and I like being challenged. It was almost a dare. I don't wanna say it's out of my wheelhouse, 'cause it's my voice. But this stuff is very different. It's edgy. Think FOO FIGHTERS, think QUEEN stadium anthem [type of sound], think that kind of mainstream rock. So it's still crunchy, and it's still got attitude, but it's not '80s rock. It's contemporary-sounding stuff."
Dee added that he is open to the idea of playing shows in support of "Now", but cautioned that "if I play out, [the setlist is] gonna [consist of] just new music. And yeah, I'll probably do [classic TWISTED SISTER songs] 'We're Not Gonna Take It' and 'I Wanna Rock' as an encore. But it's just gonna be the new sound. No more headbanging [laughs], no more throwing my body on the ground. It'll still be an intense, rocking performance, but it's gonna be more mainstream."
Snider admitted that it will be a tall order convincing rock music fans to embrace his new sound. "Will they be able to say, 'Oh, Dee Snider — new contemporary rock music. Can we accept Dee Snider?'" he said. "So far… Like I said, we demoed [several songs] and we got record deals, so we've got people who see it and hear it and believe it. So we'll continue down this path and we will see."
A new Dee Snider rock song called "To Hell And Back", which the singer recorded with his solo band, including former SILVERTIDE guitarist Nick Perri, made its online debut last July. It was announced at the time that the track would be included on a new album that Dee was working on that was also supposed to feature material from Snider's past, including his worldwide hits with TWISTED SISTER.

TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider spoke to Billboard about his new solo album, "We Are The Ones", which will be released on October 28 Red River Records (distributed by BFD/RED). Produced by Grammy-, Emmy- and Oscar-winning songwriter Damon Ranger, the record is described by Dee as "an album that is think part FOO FIGHTERS, part IMAGINE DRAGONS, part THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS." He added: "Forget anything from the past. Most of my heavy metal fans are gonna hate it; I've abandoned my past to move forward."
Asked if there was one song that shaped the sound of this record, Dee said: "The first song [Damon] brought me was a song called 'We Are The Ones', which is the title track from the album. Thematically, Damon says it's the message of Dee Snider fighting back and rebellion... it's believing in yourself. The 'We're Not Gonna Take It' message is eternal and that should continue on."
Snider also talked about the album's first single, "Rule The World", which he said was "sort of a 'We Are The Champions'; it's a very big studio anthem. When you hear it, it's the kind of thing you can totally see Super Bowl time, the whole stadium lit up and it's an uplifting song about, 'With hands held high, we can rule the world,'" he said. "It's basically about everybody just joining together with love and peace, real positive."
"We Are The Ones" will include a newly re-recorded acoustic version of TWISTED SISTER's "We're Not Gonna Take It" which has also been tapped the official anthem for The Recording Academy's advocacy efforts, including the "Fair Play Fair Pay" act. Also featured is a cover of NINE INCH NAILS' "Head Like A Hole".
Dee is unapologetically energized about where he's going as an artist. "Music inspires that genuine enthusiasm," he said. " I'm not anti the past — I'm just not one of those guys sitting there singing about the glory days. To me, these are the glory days, and the days to come are the glory days. And this new record is the part of my next glory days."
