Je viens de l'acheter. C'est du lourd, très lourd, et pas pour me déplaire : Cathedral a le don d'apporter sa patte subtile dans un style où il est pourtant difficile de surprendre. Pour l'instant, cela me rappelle "ENDTYME", qui n'est pas la facette du groupe que je préfère, mais plusieurs écoutes me séduiront peut-être.

Cathedral has a CD/DVD re-issue of "In Memoriam" coming out on June 29th via Rise Above Records. The following press release was also issued by the label:

"As with a choice few truly great bands, the first self-financed cassette recording by Cathedral - made available in October 1990 - was a pioneering underground masterpiece in its own right; the sound of a young band exploring its newfound chemistry, finding confident variations on a flawless list of influences and cultivating a sound and style that would prove hugely inspirational throughout the 1990s and beyond, being a major influence on everyone from Electric Wizard through to Reverend Bizarre.

"Where most demos are little more than a dry run for the first album, 'In Memoriam' still has its own distinct and important identity in the Cathedral canon. The debut LP that followed, 'Forest Of Equilibrium,' has a somber, devout, melodic and mystical grandeur all of its own - but 'In Memoriam' has a far murkier, earthier, more deathly intent. Creepy, cryptic and bowel-looseningly heavy, it represents the first time that the doom metal stylings of Trouble, Saint Vitus, Pentagram and Witchfinder General had been rendered in a new, more extreme metallic form.

"At the beginning of the new decade, it was really only Cathedral who were proud to assert the influence of true doom metal - a perennially unfashionable genre, but especially in a turn-of-the-decade metal scene so obsessed with speed, technicality, brutality and modernity.

"Now the former members of Cathedral have moved on and continue their musical ventures. Garry 'Gaz' Jennings released the debut from his new band Death Penalty last year and now plays as part of the band Lucifer. Non le groupe ne se reforme pas (encore) mais bientôt va sortir une inédite de 30 minutes (!), enregistrée en 2012 en prévision de leur dernier album, mais jamais mixée.

athedral’s previously unreleased 30-minute track, “Society’s Pact With Satan”, is set to be released on October 3rd via Rise Above Records.

The term ‘back from the grave’ takes on a whole new meaning with the release of this (thought to be long lost) epic recording by the much-missed British Doom Metal lords: Cathedral.

“Society’s Pact With Satan” was the last ever recording made by the band, back in 2012. It was recorded at the end of the sessions for their swan song album; 2013’s The Last Spire.

But, for some reason, the 30-minute track was not mixed at the time, thus pretty much forgotten about by everyone involved, until very recently. Rediscovered by producer Jaime Gomez Arellano, whilst sorting through his old studio recordings, he excitedly alerted the band, saying that he had discovered a long lost gem. Upon hearing it, the band members were convinced enough to agree that it should see a commercial release.

So, here we have it: the final sermon by Cathedral and what a way to go out. It’s an unapologetic, uncompromising exercise in macabre observations, musical eccentricity, brutal riffing and general arcane self-indulgence. There genuinely was/is no other band like Cathedral.

Also released on October 3rd is a 20th anniversary edition of Cathedral’s 2005 album: The Garden Of Unearthly Delights, in a huge poster sleeve.
