Les 2 anciens comparses sur Born Again travaillent à nouveau ensemble pour un disque/groupe/projet de charité, c'est pas encore très clair et visiblement pas très avancé.

Ils se sont récemment retrouvés en Arménie où ils ont été décorés par le premier ministre pour leur action (Rock aid Armenia) après le tremblement de terre de 1988, en compagnie de Brian May entre autres.

In October, DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan and BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN AND HELL guitarist Tony Iommi were awarded the Orders Of Honor - which were delivered to them by Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan - for the Armenia Grateful To Rock program.

The objective of the program, was to express gratitude to those musicians who 20 years ago participated in the Rock Aid Armenia. In 1989, within the framework of Rock Aid Armenia, the British rock-stars recorded Deep Purple’s classic ‘Smoke On The Water’ and also released a disk called Rock Aid Armenia.

Following the award ceremony, Gillan spoke with Sweden's Dalarnas Tidningar about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat (translated from Swedish by BraveWords.com) follow:

Dalarnas Tidningar: Should you not do something more with the Black Sabbath guys?
Gillan: "It was strange that you would mention it because I was in Armenia with Tony Iommi last week and stopped at his house on his way to Manchester to finish writing a song that we started on. It is a charity band that we are thinking of putting together in the future. Tony and I and a few other musicians. But this takes time and sometimes none of it (materializes) in the end."

Dalarnas Tidningar: Born Again is a grossly underestimated disc.
Gillan: "Thank you, I think so too. I like it. It was a one-time thing, sometimes such (collaborations) work and I'm glad I did it."

Legendary heavy metal guitarist Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL) has revealed to U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine that he will collaborate on new music with his former SABBATH bandmate, singer Ian Gillan (DEEP PURPLE). Iommi tells the magazine, "Ian was at [my place] a few weeks back, and we put a couple of tracks down, just to try and raise some money for Armenia.

"We raised some money 20 years ago and we wanted to do it again, to be able to buy stuff.

"We went over a few months ago because they gave us an Order Of Honor from the president and so Ian and I went over and Pat Cash came. They showed us what the money had bought. They showed us this old music school; it was freezing and the kids had no instruments so we bought them some new instruments — drums and guitars — and we want to build a new school for the kids.

"We're going to do a few songs and, hopefully, we can raise the money to afford to buy them a new school.

"The plans are quite open at the moment.

"We've talked about doing a couple of shows out there, but it's about working round what we are both doing — because we [HEAVEN & HELL] hope touring will start again soon."

In 1989 BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi and DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan were just a few names in a long list of talent involved in the recording of the DEEP PURPLE track "Smoke on The Water". This song was re-recorded to raise money for those affected by the Leninakan earthquake that struck Armenia in 1988.

In October of last year both Tony and Ian traveled to Armenia to see how the funds raised had helped the local community. On their trip they visited a music school only to find it being run out of temporary accommodation, with its only location not having been rebuilt 20 years after the earthquake had struck.

Earlier this week, Tony and Ian headed back into the studio, joined by keyboardist Jon Lord (DEEP PURPLE, WHITESNAKE) and drummer Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN) to record a new track, "Out Of My Mind", to raise money to rebuild the Armenian music school.

Commented Iommi: "I had a great time in the studio yesterday with Ian Gillan, Nicko McBrain and Jon Lord. We had a brilliant time together laying down the track 'Out of My Mind' and a lot of fun doing it, plenty of jokes and humor! As expected everyone played so well. What an exciting time!!"

Ayé, voilà le clip!
Dans ce titre j'aime surtout l'atmosphère créée par la guitare d'Iommi avec Jon Lord derrière, faudrait vraiment que ces 2 légendes bossent ensemble sur un album complet un jour. Après même sans être transcendantal j'ai envie d'en entendre davantage, Gillan est discret mais élégant, McBrain aussi sur un kit qui sonne bien.

Reste à voir ce que vaut l'autre chanson de ce single de charité.

Il faut qu'ils nous pondent un album entier, j'achete direct! je la trouve carrement cool la chanson! ce line-up! et Nicko retrouve enfin un son de caisse-claire correct!

Pour la caisse claire c'est pile la remarque que je suis faite, sur les derniers Maiden elle sonne assez molle alors qu'ici c'est sec.

Au niveau de la compo elle a été écrite par Iommi, les vocaux par Gillan.
Tandis que l'autre titre du single est composé par Steve Morris, le guitariste qui accompagne Gillan en solo depuis longtemps. Le line-up est d'ailleurs différent (avec 2 arméniens) :

Le 1er morceaux est vraiment dans la lignée de ce que fait Iommi ces dernières années. C'est massif et lourd, mais banal et peu intéressant. Le son est en revanche énorme et l'interpretation de grande qualité évidemment, mais la compo n'en demeure pas moins anecdotique, c'est dommage.

Par contre le morceau de Steve Morris est vraiment beaucoup plus riche, ambitieux et donc intéressant!

Tout un album comme ça ça aurait été super, mais pas avec Iommi en tant que compositeur.

J'aime bien ce titre. je m'attendais plus à un truc à la Hear n' Aid, en fait c'est bien lourd et evil musicalement. la voix de Ian Gillan est aussi bien excellente.

C'est désormais un album qui va sortir le 22 juin, avec ces titres déjà connus mais aussi des inédits et fonds de tiroir de Ian Gillan, Deep Purple, Tony Iommi (avec Glenn Hughes), et autres raretés. A suivre donc.

DEEP PURPLE's Ian Gillan and BLACK SABBATH's Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 by releasing a charity single, "Out Of My Mind", renewing the collaboration that led the pair to record an album in 1984, "Born Again", under the BLACK SABBATH moniker. For the occasion, the two rock legends called a few friends and were soon joined by Jason Newsted (METALLICA, VOIVOD, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM), Jon Lord (DEEP PURPLE) and Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN).

The single was a joyful and inspired moment. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio, together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.

Far from being a spectacular charity project, WHOCARES was a nice gesture, done with class, from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music, where music is considered a luxury.

"As I said once in the song 'Razzle Dazzle' (DEEP PURPLE's 'Bananas' album), 'It's a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,'" Gillan tells PanArmenian.net about the forthcoming CD. "The destruction of conformity in this case: Some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got side-lined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities; a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a 'yeah told you so' kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time. And that adds up to more money for the music school we are building in Armenia."

"And what about WHOCARES… this ad-hoc benefit band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we'd been deeply humbled by the honors and expectations bestowed upon us. Well that's it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say; it's all there in the music."

Among the tracks set to appear on the upcoming album are the two original WHOCARES songs; DEEP PURPLE's unreleased studio jam "Dick Pimple"; a song from REPO DEPO (a band Ian Gillan formed before the DEEP PURPLE reunion which never released any material); two previously unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes; obscure collaborations, B-sides lost on seven-inch vinyl; and exclusive live versions recorded live on radio.

"WhoCares" will be released on June 22 via earMUSIC.
