DESTRUCTION mainman Schmier is a larger than life fixture of the metal scene (and not just because he stands more than two meters tall): his body pierced and adorned with numerous tattoos, including matching anarchistic skulls on his temples, the boots camouflaged pants and ubiquitous biker chain are staples, on and off stage. Approaching thirty years in the business, like MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy, he knows everyone, everywhere he goes and hops from restaurant, to night spot to college hangout to after hours club, keeping the party going until the wee hours of the next morning.

A couple of days in his hometown, outside Freiburg, near the Swiss/French borders, is a trip into his childhood. From the scenic overlook on a former WW II fortification (carved into a huge boulder, site of the first Destruction promo shots), one can see the Rhine river, two mountain ranges and hillsides covered with vineyards, the area rich in wine production, as well as pear and cherry liqueurs. His boyhood home off in the distance and the cemetery where his father lies buried, is at the foot said rock. "At 15, I lost my father, grandfather and grandmother. I got tired of going to the crematory."

Apart from a liquid repasse pit-stop, as we drive along the tranquille roads, just outside the Black Forest, the bassist tosses a demo of the forthcoming album into the car's CD player. This is the most unique/intimate of studio reports/listening sessions, as said tracks are solely the band's pre-production rough takes: solos barely etched out, lyrics not completely finalized, just a bare bones effort to give all involved a basis from which to work. Schmier is adamant this debut under the new Nuclear Blast contract, be flawless. "This has more thrash riffs. I thought the last album was more of a metal sound. We're only going to (double track) the guitars this time. Last time we recorded four. We want to go back a little, give the lyrics and (bass) notes a chance to breathe."

The discussion turns to technology and some of today's younger bands' reliance on Pro Tool, Auto-Tune and other studio gimmicks to achieve a viable sound (yet completely dull, if not incompetent, live performance). The subject rankles the veteran and as it applies to Destruction, and their search for a viable, long term drummer, Schmier states, "We've got someone in mind, but I want to make sure he's the right guy. I don't want to change drummers again in a year. Problem with today's young drummers is that many rely on triggers. You don't need to hit hard with triggers, but the only way to get a true snare sound is to bash it. Too many drummers are pussies!"

Things like album sequence haven't been finalized, but the first song my chauffeur cues up is an absolute face ripper ('Sacrifice'?). Another retains that old 'Bestial Invasion' riffage and there's also a 'Butcher Strikes Back' intensity on the other after that. Of the incomplete lyrics, it's standard Schmier fare, including a particularly snide anti-religious cut. Overall, the album will probably contain ten tracks (limited edition, possibly one bonus), with the Japanese getting an exclusive song (as always). A version of DIO's 'Stand Up And Shout' has yet to be recorded and will be included amongst the originals. The title cut ('Day Of Reckoning') is more moody, allowing guitarist Mike Sifringer to show his more emotive side, particularly during the intro.

je les ai revu y'a pas longtemps à zurich pour une date hors tournée, argh toujours aussi bon ! par contre le dernier je l'ai vraiment trouvé chiant... en fait dans les derniers il y a que "the antichrist" qui me plait vraiment !

German thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION will release their new album, "Day Of Reckoning", on February 28, 2011 via Nuclear Blast Records. The first limited edition of the album will not feature the band's logo on the booklet while the vinyl version and second pressing of the CD will show a red DESTRUCTION logo on it.

Commented DESTRUCTION bassist/vocalist Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer: "First of all, 'cause I hear the hardcore fans already complaining, the DESTRUCTION skull and the butcher can be found in the illustrated booklet of 'Day Of Reckoning'.

"The last man on earth that faces the end of the world, the concept of the album had to have the most evil base with a striking eye-catching look.

"We decided to not use the classical butcher theme on the cover front this time, 'cause this album needed a malicious look with symbols that express this strong title in the most bold and simple way.

"The story line will continue through the whole cover art and booklet. Gyula, a fantastic artist and metal fan from Hungary, was a great help for us with nailing down this concept. It's not the first time we worked with him; he illustrated all our latest releases!
