C'est un nouveau projet "dark metal / prog" de Dan Swano :
WITHERSCAPE, the new atmospheric and progressive dark metal outfit formed by Swedish singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire Dan Swanö along with fellow Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ragnar Widerberg, will release its debut album, "The Inheritance", on July 29 in Europe and August 6 in North America via Century Media Records.

WITHERSCAPE sees Dan teaming with Widerberg, to create an intense concept album — which should not only musically please fans of earlier Swanö works like "Moontower" and EDGE OF SANITY, but also attract fans of contemporary progressively atmospheric metal in the vein of OPETH, BARREN EARTH and AMORPHIS.

The album song "Astrid Falls" can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

Comments Swanö: "'Astrid Falls' is one of my many favorite songs on the album. It represents the WITHERSCAPE sound in a good way. It's showcasing the clean and growling vocal interplay and the overall 'vibe' of my and Ragnar's playing as well as the dynamics of our songwriting."

According to Swanö, WITHERSCAPE has been in planning for a long time, spawned as a result of his working relationship with Widerberg, which began at a Swedish music store. The two multi-instrumentalists discovered that they had so much in common musically that brainstorming for a full-on metal project of their own was the next logical step. Widerberg cites acts like early JUDAS PRIEST, RUSH, KING CRIMSON and MERCYFUL FATE as far as his inspirations in regards to WITHERSCAPE and Swanö elaborates his list to also include JUDAS PRIEST (1975-1989), VOIVOD, QUEENSRŸCHE, RUSH, MARILLION and MERCYFUL FATE.

WITHERSCAPE's "The Inheritance" is the first release under a longterm worldwide recording deal signed between Dan Swanö and Century Media Records earlier this year.

WITHERSCAPE is:

Dan Swanö - Vocals, Drums und Keyboards
Ragnar Widerberg – Guitar, Bass

Most dedicated metalheads will not only be able to call themselves owners of certain releases by one Dan's many outstanding bands/projects (EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE), but also the work at his own Unisound studio will surely have left a mark in everyone's record collection at some point: OPETH, KATATONIA, DISSECTION, MERCILESS, 59 TIMES THE PAIN, DARK FUNERAL, HAIL OF BULLETS, MARDUK, MILLENCOLIN and NASUM, to name but a few.

Swanö has been no stranger to Century Media Records: He was originally involved with the death metal supergroup BLOODBATH (also featuring members of OPETH and KATATONIA), who released the "Breeding Death" EP as well as the amazing first two albums, "Resurrection Through Carnage" and "Nightmares Made Flesh", via Century Media. Most recently, Swanö has been heavily working again as producer and mixer of albums, including releases by Century Media artists such as ASPHYX, GRAND SUPREME BLOOD COURT, ODDLAND and MORGOTH.

Un EP sort en décembre avec un nouveau titre, et 3 reprises (2 autres reprises seront disponibles avec la version digitale) :
Witherscape, the new dark metal outfit formed by Swedish singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire Dan Swanö (ex-Edge Of Sanity/Bloodbath, Nightingale, etc.) together with fellow Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ragnar Widerberg, will release The New Tomorrow EP via Century Media Records on December 8th.

Succeeding last year’s debut album, The Inheritance, which entered the official sales charts in Germany at # 97 upon release, the new EP marks a conceptual and musical bridge between the thick concept of the debut and their upcoming sophomore album, expected for a late 2015 release.

The New Tomorrow EP tracklisting:

"The New Tomorrow"
"Defenders Of Creation"
"A World Without Heroes"
"Out In The Cold"
"Dead For Another Day"

The New Tomorrow contains five unreleased songs: A brand new (title) track, three cover songs (“Defenders Of Creation” by Warrior, “A World Without Heroes” by KISS and “Out In The Cold” by Judas Priest) and “Dead For Another Day” (an extension of the debut album’s “Dead For A Day” single).

It's CD version (10 tracks) will also include special vinyl-mix versions of the same songs as bonus and the Digital Download version (7 tracks) includes another two bonus cover songs (“A Cry For Everyone” by Gentle Giant and “Last Rose Of Summer” by Judas Priest) from the sessions of The Inheritance, which are so far digitally unreleased.

The 12” vinyl version of the EP is playable on 45rpm, will be pressed on 180 gr. vinyl and comes either as standard black edition or in the following limited coloured options: Gold (100x, via CM Distro Europe), Transparent Red (200x, via CM Distro Europe) or Neon Orange (100x, via CM Distro USA). Pre-orders will be available soon.

Witherscape’s Dan Swanö checked in to comment on the release as follows: “The new track "The New Tomorrow" is introducing the new main character, "mannen i vitt" (“The man in white”) and the storyline revolves around his quest for the meaning of life and how he wants to make a difference in the world of the forsaken. It is 1950 and he finds this wonderful estate up north and buys it at an auction. He begins the work to turn it into a sanctuary for ones with broken spirits or other disabilities, who need to escape the ever-growing stress of the big city life. The plot will continue on the 2nd full length Witherscape album, which will hopefully be out at the end of 2015.

The cover versions were chosen because they are songs that resonate with us at their very core, but didn’t necessarily have - in our humble opinion - the production or performance to portray their full glory. We gave them the Witherscape treatment and learned a lot from analyzing, performing and recording them. And we will bring that experience with us into the writing for the 2nd album…

The re-make of "Dead For A Day" called "Dead For Another Day" was born out of the idea to let Witherscape make a Witherscape cover and remove all things death and metal to see what it would sound like. We fell in love with the new approach and decided to include it on the EP to show the versatility that can be expected from this band!”

La suite est en cours :
Witherscape - the duo of Dan Swano and Ragnar Widerberg - is now working on a sophomore studio album. The band's debut "The Inheritance" netted Witherscape our best newcomer of 2013 award and you can read our review of the album right here.

Witherscape just issued this update about the new album's recording process via Facebook: "Yo!! The vocal recordings for the 2nd Witherscape album are going super! Almost all of the 'not growled' vocals are done.

"The combo of Shure SM7B and Universal Audio 6176 is just insane. It's really inspiring to sing with a 'mix ready' sound for a change. Gotta go now, have some Slowdive drum sounds to nail."

Stay tuned for full details as they become available. To tide fans over between releases, Witherscape also released an in-between EP titled "The New Tomorrow" back in December of 2014.

Nouvel album dispo sur Spotify :

Witherscape has now launched a second single from upcoming sophomore release, "The Northern Sanctuary," which is arriving July 22nd, 2016 via Century Media Records.

Check out the lyric video (designed by Cloud Music Typography) for the extremely catchy "In The Eyes Of Idols" below. Dan Swanö checked in to comment about the song and the album's lyrical storyline as follows:

"There is a 50 year jump in the conceptual time line since 'The Inheritance.' 'The Northern Sanctuary' picks up where we left off with the 'The New Tomorrow' EP. The main character Mannen i vitt (The man in white) has now restored the house where all the horror initially happened and Fristaden i Norr (The Northern Sanctuary) is open for business!

"He rents out rooms to people from the big cities, who are aiming for some peaceful northern Swedish silence. But the entity still haunts the house and Mannen i vitt is possessed by it, so consequently he/it does terrible things to the patients. Since the house is built on one of the gates to hell, there's a ritual taking place, opening the hellish dimension from where the evil entity once came, so it can go back there..."

Once again, lyricist Paul Kuhr (Novembers Doom) fleshed out the story invented by the band and contributed the lyrics for "The Northern Sanctuary." In regards to the lyrics for "In The Eyes Of Idols," he had this to say:

"Daily life in the Sanctuary begins. Breakfast, social interaction, Aqua Therapy. The man in white struggles with his faith and prayer against the conventional methods he uses to cure the sick. Extreme procedures uncover oddities in behavior with the most severely mentally ill. Pushing the patients to their limits uncover 'Gifts' within the strong. Unexplainable, and beautiful, powers that science fiction is based on. Praying for the answers, the man in white is met with other thoughts..."

The album's full track listing is as follows:

1. Wake Of Infinity (04:38) [streaming here]
2. In The Eyes Of Idols (03:58)
3. Rapture Ballet (04:25)
